I was awakened this morning to a BBC Radio Scotland news item about a certain country which does not permit women to drive - seemingly the only one in the world to do so.
There is a petition to the Head of State to rectify this situation. I'm sure there will be several punters here who can name it - anybody ? |

It would appear things aren't this rosy... Safety: Road Conditions and Road Hazards: Short-term male visitors may drive using their U.S. driver's license in Saudi Arabia. American men employed in Saudi Arabia should obtain a local driver's license from the Department of Traffic Police. Women are not allowed to drive automobiles or ride bicycles on public roads throughout the Kingdom. Traffic safety and road conditions vary greatly throughout Saudi Arabia. In the larger cities, roadways are often multi-lane and well-constructed, with adequate road markings and lighting. However, in rural areas, road surfaces range from pavement to sand and gravel, and lighting and road markings may be non-existent. Traffic accidents are a significant hazard and driving habits are generally poor. The common denominator among drivers throughout the Kingdom is speed. Traffic accidents involving high speed is the rule, with many automobiles being driven recklessly by minors or adults with little driving experience or training. In the event of a traffic accident resulting in personal injury, all persons involved (if not in the hospital) will be taken to the local police station. Drivers are likely to be held for several days until responsibility is determined and any reparations paid. In many cases, all drivers involved in the accident are held in custody, regardless of fault. Those involved in an accident should immediately contact their sponsor and the U.S. Embassy or nearest U.S. Consulate for assistance. http://saudiarabia.osac.gov/Reports/report.cfm?contentID=63853 |

That would be hard on the men. If the old lady can't do the chores, they going to have to run the errands. I got other things to do myself....

Completely off-topic but my observations....
Male drivers tend to be decisive. They make a decision and act on it - even when the decision is a bad one and leads to catastrophic consequences. Female drivers tend to be less decisive. They question their decisions and apparently hesitate in acting. This could lead to catastrophic consequences. Both approaches have their good points and bad points. And both are equally frightening and frustrating to the drivers of the opposite gender that happen to be around them in traffic. |

You shouldn't talk about our "Wonderful" Middle Eastern ally that way. They may take offense, cut off the oil and side with our enemies (if they aren't doing that already) - - Wandering and Wondering |

It's a sad statement that Iran and Syria (and even Saddam's Iraq) gave women more rights than our beloved ally Saudi Arabia...............

Have a problem digesting the truth djay? It's an honest-to-God fact.......
I have no problems sleeping at night. At least Iran and Syria don't stoop to beheading (with a sword) a 19 year old girl who is likely innocent like the Saudi's. If it wasn't for their oil, we already would have invaded and overthrown the Saudi government for their brutality. Oh, by the way - in regards to the "POS" comment, "F" off..............

Very few human beings (if any) make decisions or hesitate in deciding before acting. Human beings predominantly act first and then rationalize their actions after the fact. There isn't much of a decision process going on while driving... or much of anything else either. |

Speak for yourself. As a motorcycle rider I'm constantly making decisions and evaluating the situation. It's my life that's on the line. These are my opinions. Yours may differ. |

I'm sure you don't. Ignorance is bliss, after all.
Yeah, the Iranians prefer stoning women to death... wouldn't want to dull a sword blade on a mere woman, I guess. |
