DH left a few days ago for training school, and my oldest is locking everything up like Ft. knox.

We never lock the windows, (we live on post housing the odds of a break in are HIGHLY unlikely)all of the sudden he's checking to make sure everything is locked 3x, but it's akin to a paranoi of sorts. He even locks the garage, which I'm surprised he knew how to do since it's difficult.

He must not know that I could turn into a pitbull if someone tried to break in to do us harm Wink

Anyway on average, do you think most folk lock their windows at night? The doors are a given, but I know a lot of ppl who don't lock the windows.

If the two growling and barking Labs don't deter them, the bark of the .45 will.

Haven't locked a door in years.

Matter of fact, I don't even have a key to my house.

Yes my wife and I lock the doors and (ground floor for sure)windows to protect any would-be infiltrater's from my baseball bat and my dog.

If locking the place up makes your son and other family member's feel safe and secure......then it's a good thing. No harm in making precautions to be safe.

He is playing "family protector" as your dh no doubt told him to. It is part of growing up, and your toughing it out (unless he go very overboard) is your part of the process here. Just like you are supposed to eat your 5-year olds catastropic cookies and say something nice about them.

regards JakobA

Nah, I thought it might be that too, but I just outright asked him. I asked him if he gets scared when daddy leaves. He said''yea, a little''.

Home protection around here: A loyal schnauzer, a 9mm S&W, and the high ground. I never want to be forced to kill anyone in defense of my home and family, but I'm ready if need be. Gun

My locks actually suck.

Bought - perhaps your oldest is starting to grow up and take a sense of responsiblity for family safety (those aspects where he can make a positive effect)?

I would be proud Smile

He is being the "man" of the family while your DH is gone. Bought you should be so proud. You aren't raising a 'boy' you are raising a MAN... Good job!
You should praise him for his vigilence and his maturity (and unless he starts truly gettng OC about it, he's fine).

As for the 'wimp' thing... I'm sure he knows you would walk into he!! to put out the fires with an icecube for him.

A dear friend, a 30 year cop, gave me what for about leaving my windows open at night (I sleep better with the cool, crisp night air blowing across the bed) so now I lock the windows and doors at night. It keeps him from pulling what's left of his hair out Wink

My dogs are well trained. You can come up to my house knock on the door without fear. Make one hostile move, or on command they will take anyone down like a 250 pound bore hog. I do lock the doors though......

I only lock the window that leads to the fire escape... Seems there aren't too many 45-foot-tall burglars walking around out there. Smile

It not about getting up from below.
Most cat burglars go down on a rope from the roof, or from a window they can get to above the one they go in through.

Thanks all. I think I figured out the reason it bothered me.

Number one, I don't want my kids to feel unsafe when it's just me. My mom showed fear everytime my dad went TDY, I always had to sleep in the same room with her etc.

Also I HATE feeling inadequate as a mother. It's the same feeling I get when trying to help him with his math(don't laugh 6th grade math aint what 6th grade math used to be) So in a sense- I turned his actions inward and shouldn't have.

Bought..my little man, who will be 9 in January, did the same thing when his dad moved out in March. Every night before he heads up to bed, he checks the slider door and Heaven help me if it isn't locked..I get a lecture about it. (gee..wonder where he gets that from..his Dad loves to lecture)

Never mind the fact that we have 2 very large beasties, Magnum now weighs in at 135 lbs while Kaya has maintained her 125 lbs. He said that when his Dad left, he asked Stevie to make sure we were safe at night. I think the routine of it helps him sleep at night.

You're doing a great job Mom Wink
