When President George W. Bush went to his first Group of Eight summit in 2001, a dominant issue was the dollar -- the strong dollar, that is. The U.S. currency was on a record-setting streak, and the free-marketeering president wasn't going to stand in the way.

Now where are we 7 some years later? 41% drop against the commies in Europe.

Link.

Oh... The dollar went down, so it's "out of Bush's control".

However, I'm not so sure that'd be case if the dollar had somehow gone up... Then he'd have "done a great job".

Whatever... 199 more days will go quite quickly.

Well, I'm in the re-education camp for pointed criticism of the "Commander in Chief," so all I can say is -

the dollar going down is a good thing, it will give us plenty of jobs in hotel and food service for those rich European and Chinese tourists coming here. We don't really need to drive cars anyways, gas being so high.

That's true enough, anyway! They're holding one shait-load of our paper!

I have been out of work for 15 months since my company was bought out. They have imported (immigrated) so much labor, you can't even get a dishwashing job. I was lucky though, I will get a pension at 66, it was one of the few companies that still had a pension plan. I have finally been approved for schooling for displaced workers, and at least will have a little income coming in.............but hey, keep the presses running.............

Business sensation journalism.

Bush isn't a God. He doesn't set the fed interest rate. Fed Reserve does that. Federal Reserve controls the money supply. It can print more banknotes. If the interest rate in the US keeps going down, why should investors hold USD if they can earn more interest in EUR? Bush can't control what the dollar vs euro should be. Besides, if the government of X country decides to change from 90% USD in foreign currency reserve to 45% USD & 45% EUR, what can Bush do? The President of the US cannot force private investors and foreign governments to do certain things. He doesn't have the power to manipulate the global market.

Good Point!

I live in the East Village of Manhattan, and the number of tourists. while always high, has increased ten fold. So, I'm learning some neat American native dances and ceromonies to use on these Europeans and Aisians. My smile is right, and I always offer to carry their bags for thirty or forty bucks which they playfully toss on the ground for me.

I've studied the "Big Smile," that they seem to appreciate. Yes, the coming years should be a lot of fun.

In fact he has nothing to do with anything in the Country. Absoutely nothing can be said against him, because he's has no power at all!

And as we all know Mr. Clinton betrayed America by reducing the size of the military. I heard that from Mr. Bush's supporters, such as Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, etc, etc, and I heard that on this board.

And can you believe that after seven years of power, Mr. Bush has been unable to restore the missing military?

But then again, as you point out, the Democrats have controlled Congress for a whole year, and they MUST be responsible.

Can you post the speeches they gave opposing restoring the size of the military? Big Grin

The Marine Corps has been authorized to plus-up under Bush. I'm not certain about the other services, but I believe they have been authorized to plus-up as well.

The you better thank Robert gates...

quote:
In early 2007, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates proposed to the President to increase the overall size of the military by approximately 92,000 troops over the course of five years. Specifically, the proposal calls for an Army troop cap of 545,000 to 550,000 active duty soldiers and a troop cap of 202,000 to 205,000 active duty Marines. The total active duty force of the United States after the buildup will be about 1,479,000.[7]

Clearly FINALLY, someone decided that we should have the army we need. A little late, waiting seven years, but better late than never. And of course, even Kerry asked for this increase Years ago.
