Kat and i saw Turtle Creek's the Vogues recently at a charity fundraiser in McKeesport........ The Turtles were/are a California band.

Here's a cool piece of trivia -- On the FIRST Mothers of Invention (frank zappa) album "Freak Out", Frank's lookin for shock value, and in the liner notes he quotes a record industry exec's opinion of the Mothers -- It went something like "gimme a couple thousand dollars, get'm all a bath and a haircut, and I could make them as big as the Turtles." in less than five years, the Turtles were defunct, the Mothers were bigger than ever, and the two lead singers from the Turtles, Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan, had joined the Mothers as "Flo and Eddie". This was the ultimate comeuppance for those of us involved in the counterculture music scene.

then, coming full circle, Flo and Eddie are now touring as the Turtles -- saw them at the State theater in Uniontown last year, which means I have REALLY sold out to "THE MAN".

Michael Parks - Long Lonesome Highway.

It was the theme song for a television show called "Then Came Bronson" or something close to that.

One hit wonders? Well let’s see:
12 Presidents have served a single elected term - John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Martin Van Buren, James K Polk, Franklin Pierce, James Buchanan, Rutherford B Hayes, Benjamin Harrison, William Howard Taft, Herbert Hoover, Jimmy Carter and George HW Bush.
4 Presidents - Theodore Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, Harry S Truman and Lyndon B Johnson - have succeeded to the Presidency through death, and then gone on to serve a single elected term of their own.
3 Presidents were elected to second terms but failed to complete them. - Abraham Lincoln and William McKinley served only a few weeks or months of their second terms before being assassinated, and Richard M Nixon, resigned 19 months into his second term.
3 Presidents - William H Harrison, Zachary Taylor, and Warren G Harding - died during their first terms and so had no opportunity to seek a second.
4 Presidents - John Tyler, Millard Fillmore, Andrew Johnson and Gerald Ford - succeeded from the Vice-Presidency but did not win elected terms of their own.
That gives 26 Presidentts who were "single-termers" or one hit wonders by one definition or another.
Or at least according to wikipedia:
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_many_US_Presidents_served_only_one_term

Oh, jeesh! You meant recordings! Songs! Records! Never mind!!

Because you have to draw the line somewhere:

We had this same discussion on another forum (I have even cut and pasted some of my same responses there to here - plagiarizing myself); all of us decided to come close to an agreement that "One Hit Wonder" would be defined as anyone who only had one US top 40 pop single in their career (because this his how Billboard loosely defines the term). The UK defines one hit wonder by the same criteria but gives the artist a better chance of breaking into the top 75.

Obviously, there are several artists with long illustrious careers who meet this criteria (and that's where the debate comes into play). Sure, Nena had a great singing career... in GERMANY; but she only broke into the US charts once.

By the Billboard definition: Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Rush, Lou Reed and The Grateful Dead are ALL one hit wonders. Do we, the public, consider them so? Not really... because all of them sold multiple albums and have a huge fan base to this day (including the first two who suffered more from an early, extended case of being dead, which was probably the sole contributer to their inclusion). But, technically, the argument could be made - the reason most people don't is that all of those artist have multiple songs well known to the general public. I admitted that Information Society had a couple of other albums and even charted more than once in top 40 Pop. They also charted more than once in top 10 Dance genre... however; no one has a clue what their other top 40 pop single was, because it only barely broke in and wasn't there for very long and - to the second point - who pays attention to Top 40 dance? I Wanna Know (Pure Energy) remains the only song for which that band is remembered.

I try to give the benefit of the doubt by not listing artists of good longevity on the US charts. I personally think The Grateful Dead suck donkey balls... but I cannot ignore the fact that they had a tremendous career and an enormous fan base. At the same time, I think T'pau was awesome, I own all their albums, but I acknowledge that the rest of the world views them as a flash in the pan.
Thanks Bonesaw, that makes a bit more sense now... and you are most certainly correct about Nena. It was years after the release before I even found that Nena HAD released an American album...

But some of the other posters are calling persons and bands "one hit wonders" when they have had multiple releases in the Pop 40 charts. One of our problems may be that there are s-o-o-o-o many top 40 charts out there... of which POP is only one. The only reason I knew that one existed was because of Casy Kassum (sp?) from decades ago.

Do actors count? Patrick Swayze had 'She's Like the Wind', on the Dirty Dancing soundtrack. Don Johnson and Eddie Murphy had hit singles also.
