A One Hit Wonder so popular they made it into a movie

That's the thing with most one hit wonders. People don't realize how mortally lame they are until years later. The "artist" who wrote these pieces of crap had no depth to begin with (as evidence from a career going nowhere before or after), so what is it about these songs that he/she got so damn lucky with? Well, it's usually not the talent of the writing.

I was about 12 when this song came out. I thought it was cool... for about two weeks (it stuck around much longer).

Tom Tom Club - "Genius of Love"

A one hit wonder by Tina Weymouth, who worked on little solo projects like this when she wasn't working or touring with the other (far more) popular avant garde band of which she was a member.

"I was the black sheep of the family..."

I'm sure you were, Terry; no doubt because of this song.

A spleenectomy performed by epileptic monkey would be less painful.

A one hit wonder by a band named after a Star Trek character

A one hit wonder incorporating dialogue of a Star Trek character*

A one hit wonder that mentions a Star Trek character

Star Trek... it's the musician's kiss of death.

* technically not true because Information Society had two other songs in the top 40 Pop genre... but nobody remembers either of them. Besides... I wanted to run with the joke, so deal with it.

Men Without Hats - "Safety Dance"

I don't know too many people who hate this song... there's just something about it that seems to be the perfect cocktail of normally repellent things brought together to somehow create something that draws you right in:

1 shot synth-rock
2 shots Renaissance Fair
Top off with the promotion of a gay dance move that no human being will ever imitate and one dwarf (in case no one buys the dance move)

... shake well and serve.

Napolean XIV -- They're coming to Take Me Away Ha Ha

http://youtube.com/watch?v=hnzHtm1jhL4

There was a time when any form of mental illness could be sterotyped by having your character wear a Napolean hat and insert his hand into the buttons of his or her shirt.

The Small Faces -- Itchycoo Park

http://youtube.com/watch?v=6O6z-CQLU8I

The Faces, with ex Jeff Beck Group members Rod Stewart and Ron Wood had a number of hits, but the original incarnation, the Small Faces, with Steve Marriott (who left to form Humble Pie) really had only one major US Hit. The song content, and the phase shifted drums had a considerable influence on my 9th grade psyche......

Why is it that I see dozens of songs listed on this "One Hit Wonders" thread whose bands/singers enjoyed multiple albums? Come on folks... Someone included even the mega band "Journey."
