Fifty-eight years ago, at the outbreak of the Korean War, South Korean authorities secretively executed, usually without legal process, tens of thousands of southern leftists and others rightly or wrongly identified as sympathizers. Today a government Truth and Reconciliation Commission is working to dig up the facts, and the remains of victims.

How could such a bloodbath have been hidden from history?

Just more examples of the human condition? Is anyone truely innocent?

Doesn't qualify as "Genocide," since their all Koreans, and it was 57 years ago. Maybe you ought to read up on what North Koreans did to South Koreans when they pushed our army clear to the southern tip of the peninsula, then what both the Chinese and North Koreans did to South Koreans the second time they push our army to the south end of the peninsula.

M.A.S.H. had a great time making fun of this war and criticizing our involvement in it (how commie funny of them, don't you think?), thus blurring the fact that the communists butchered many thousands in what they thought was preparation of all Korea falling under communist rule - -

Retaliation may not be pretty, but it may be just! An eye for an eye!

Well I just thought it was interesting. We expect it from the communists. And I realize S Korea was no where near a democracy back in those days. But its still interesting to see the skeletons just about every society has in its closet.

It was not in retaliation. It preceeded the invassion.

In this case, it doesn't look like "retaliation". According to the article, the executions took place before the N. Koreans "butchered many thousands" of S. Koreans.

Killing lefties a genocide?

Hardly.

And you make that sound like a bad thing. Roll Eyes

As Greywolfghost said, you should read up on the history. I suggest that you start a 1905 when Japan annexed the country, through WW2 into the Korean war right up to 7/27/53.

Know Your Enemy. Do not react to him. Make him react to you.

Thats funny that the article described the victims as leftists rather than communists. I guess the press is finally admitting they are essentially the same thing?

According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, it qualifies as 'genocide'. At least I would consider this a political "cleansing" or destruction.

genocide

genocidegen-

Main Entry: geno·cide
Pronunciation: \ˈje-nə-ˌsīd\
Function: noun
Date: 1944
: the deliberate and systematic destruction of a racial, political, or cultural group
— geno·cid·al \ˌje-nə-ˈsī-dəl\ adjective

These are my opinions. Yours may differ.
