“Al Qaeda is more capable of attacking inside the United States than it was last year, and its cadre of senior leaders has recruited and trained "dozens" of militants capable of blending into Western society to carry out attacks, the analyst said.

The remarks Tuesday by the intelligence analyst, Ted Gistaro, were the most comprehensive assessment of the Qaeda threat by an American official since the National Intelligence Estimate issued last summer, which concluded that Al Qaeda had largely rebuilt its haven in Pakistan's tribal areas.”

America’s number one enemy has gone from being “disorganized and on the run” in 2002 to being a “clear and present danger” to the United States in 2008.

President Bush will leave office with America under threat of attack by an enemy that has out-maneuvered him and is poised to attack again.

President Bush has often said that “My biggest job is to protect the American people.”

After more than six years of war, it is clear that the CinC has failed his biggest job.

All I can say is, the Dems have set the bar so high,if obama gets in, I hope everything is peaches and cream.
If not, the Repubs will be there to attack.

al Qaeda plotted and trained for eight years to attack the twin towers a second time after their first attack in 1993.

No one really thinks President Clinton had anything to do with preventing an attack for those eight years. It is how al Qaeda operates.

It has been less than seven years since the 9/11 attack. Al Qaeda may be frustrated because America is a hardened target, but they are patient. And now they have safe havens from which to plan and train for the next attack.

Go ahead and make excuses for how al Qaeda has gained strength in the last six years.

And by all means, join the CinC and stick your head in the sand and ignore the “clear and present danger” that al Qaeda has become. Maybe that will make you feel safe.

Another "unintended consequence" of the Iraqi invasion -- diluting and redirecting the correct center of gravity of the GWOT away from Afghanistan. The mission was not complete there, and we had no imminent or immediate threat from Iraq.

If we had adhered to Weinberger and Powell doctrines, we'd likely not have this renewed threat from Waziristan, and we'd certainly not have endured the catastrophic price we've paid for the Iraqi incursion. We've suffered from the twin failures from this administration --

A lack of grand strategy
A myopic political "vision" from a few misdirected and arrogant senior policymakers

Yeah, no doubt.. all the attacks that have occurred in the US since 2001 are proof positive of your position.

Take note that they have regrouped in "pakistan", not afghanistan.. though no doubt, had we not invaded Iraq we would've had more forces available with which to invade Pakistan... and no problem getting UN authorization to do so....

Republicans will attack Obama no matter what he does.

It has become one of the ways to deflect the criticism of President Bush –

Economy is bad – it was worse President Carter.

Iraq is a no-win debacle - President Clinton gutted the military.

America’s number one enemy went from being “on the run and disorganized” to a “clear and present danger” to the United States – what is the excuse for that failure?

Yes, they got it pretty good in P-stan. Until the camps and safe-houses are hit, they will be a potent threat. There will be no stable A-stan. Better find a new logistics route if the US is going to strike them. Wish they would. By the way, Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. Saddam was boxed in. The war against the people who rammed those planes into WTC were in AFGHANISTAN. Frown

Presently the P-stani army is heavily engaged in Bajaur, really pouring it on after those bombings that killed dozens, and it was a sensitive site that was hit. Lets see how long this lasts, coz the ISI and parts of the P-stani military are T-ban supporters, aiding and abetting them. I still believe the only way to really hurt them is the US and NATO allies that are willing, bomb those 150+camps in Waziristan to dust, then maybe the security in A-stan will improve. NATO's performance is really lacking. So, its up to the US/UK again. NATO has lost its respect, the Russians must be laughing pretty hard by now.

CinC Bush still insists that Iraq is the center of the GWOT.

He is wrong again.

Pakistan is where the real war is, and we do not have a significant military presence there or an effective counter to America's number one enemy.

"There are many factors that justify fear for Pakistan. There is fear that with the help of neighboring countries, extremist forces will be able to bring Pakistan down into a bloody cesspool that terrorists will benefit from, particularly the Al Qaeda movement, by turning a large part of Pakistan into a stronghold and fertile grounds for terrorists and extremist thinking."

ABC News online, 8/29 article says the hadji's are hitting the convoys going into Kabul, trying the same strategy they used against the Soviets, the Brits in the 1800's and now. They are operating very close to Kabul. If there are a good number of NATO soldiers in Kabul, why isn't this problem being addressed? The target now is logistics. The US is gonna have to take the lead on this, unless the French step up. This is the same area those French para's were ambushed. We have neglected this theatre, and this is the result.
