I will be interested in finding out why myself. And, just out of curiosity, who is the "Very Top?" "Success seems to be largely a matter of hanging on after others have let go." -- William Feather |

Well, if you want to turn it into a girl scout cookie bake site. Press right on. No point in hanging around as nothing worth discussion will be posted after this. Homes and gardens already has a site. Guerss some folks simply cannot handle controversy.
"Free Speech", what a joke on the site populated by defenders of that idea... Have a nice bake sale! |

Whoever owns this site has the right to set whatever rules they want. However, if they are going to do it be honest about it, and give a reason or no reason at all. Just don't make stuff up about copyrights and hyperlinks. There is no copyright difference in posting "www.cnn.com" and posting a hyperlink.
It is all revenue and advertiser related, which is fine it is a for profit company. They can make whatever rules they want, but to make it seem like they were forced to do this because of copyright laws just isn't right. |

What "OWNERS" fail to understand is that WE (the customers) arn't FORCED to "buy their product" Their "ownership" is meaningless if they drive off their customers. It a paticipatory relationship on both sides of the "ownership" fence. Military dot com was providing a SERVICE. They had ads all over the site to support that service. When they cease to SERVE, then their usefulness to their customers disappears. And eventually THEY will disappear (or be so totally changed that "military dot come" won't be an appropriate discription for what they have become. To remove the links may not have such a horrible impact on the other sections of the site, but for point-counterpoint, it is a death knell as you cannot then really substanciate your points in a useful manner when challenged. What they HAVE done though is successfully "SILENCED" any areas that may have been controversal. There is a current of such activity flowing in many areaas of the Nation to silence descent, especially with the "OWNERS" (Read that as corporate america) of many of our resources an means of communication. At least the Comminist Chinese had a wall where one could put up contraversal topics, but guess we don't have that kind of freedom in an "ownership" society...(Where "They" own and we are slugs) |

Some of you might like to try arrse.co.uk, it can get silly and it is very British (albeit with a multinational section) but it isn't so busy trying to make money that it invents silly rules.

Here's the upcoming legislation alluded to earlier:
[=http://www.publicknowledge.org/node/1733]http://www.publicknowledge.org/node/1733[/URL] There is legislation coming down the pipe that can be a huge burden to you if you're an artist or writer. I happen to be both. In an effort to help large contributors, people like Disney, Pixar, news and magazine moguls, and other special interests, draconian limitations on copyright are in the works. Republicans, bless their pea-picking hearts, are going to see to it that special commercial (as in non-governmental) copyright warehouses are to be set up; these warehouses will be able to charge whatthehellever they feel like; and an artist or writer will have to get a paid-for copyright--the price of which will be determined by these vultures ...something which is presently automatic. And, if someone sees your work, likes it, and does "due diligence" in trying to find you and can't, they can use your work. It's a bullsht law. It means that creative people who already have a helluva time trying to get their work sold will now have extra expense and time spent protecting it, and the protection will amount to nothing because they won't be able to afford to legally fend off the Pixar's, Times's, and Disney's. And... of course, there'll be a shakeout in the internet: limitations of free speech will be augmented by whatever the FCC and Homeland Security think are appropriate to shape our thoughts. The AFA will be proud. This message has been edited. Last edited by: mainedawg, |

Because of the thought police. If I were a mod that was asked to enforce the farce, I would quit. I'm surprised some haven't already. |

LINK? What Links?

Boy am I really confused, because all the links look the same.... whether you made them yourselves from an external link or not. Isn't that the same? How are external links going to be controlled if you know how to use "html code"? This message has been edited. Last edited by: <klassylady25>, |

Just being facetious KL, I didn't post a link. That was the point I thought. |

"The day is wasted in which you learn nothing" |
I'll try to make this a brief and coherent 2¢ worth.
If I throw a free party and invite everybody, I have to expect to see all kinds. If I insist that MY rules be observed in MY house, I am within my rights and have the absolute authority to require everyone to OBEY the (excluding illegal acts, of course). I may welcome, even invite, suggestions but don't have to...it's MY house and MY party. If, for any reason, and I mean ANY reason, someone doesn't like my rules or breaks them, I will boot him out (maybe give warnings or explanations...maybe not). On the other hand, every free guest is free to leave at any time, bye. I have absolutely no problem with private ownership or marketing or profits. I won't presume to know better than the owner how to run his business. On the other hand, I reserve the right to take my business elsewhere. Seems a lot of the b itching and criticim is totally uncalled for and out of line. As Navy8086 put it, there are 3 chioces, pick one. Nothing is forever. |

Looks like we may need to press a new batch of 'Hysterical Over-reaction' badges, they're shifting faster than the cookies... You can't be controversial without links? Quote your source, name the source, and let posters Google it if they are doubtful. This isn't really a free speech issue (although free speech isn't guaranteed by any internet forum, anyway). |

I put out feelers with several tech contacts and asked their opinions about what is going on here. It's as most people suspect - all about the money.
Of all my contacts, two Web Developers had the best insight: They suspect that Military Advantage's visitors may have dropped-off and that one way of countering that (and not losing ad revenue) would be looping all links back into themselves in order to drive them back up. They initially suspected that it might also be a way of keeping those on the site from clicking off, however, since opening a new link does not automatically close the old one, they don't think that's the case. This is a scheme for Military Advantage to skew their own numbers so they can screw their own advertisers out of more money; but they need you - the faithful member - to be their pawns. Won't you lend a hand? From my insight, it would also have the double advantage of killing Point/Counterpoint. This forum causes them the most problems, and they wouldn't miss it a bit. However, they would probably miss the membership. |

This change seems quite odd. I don't think I've ever encountered a message board, (of decent size), that doesn't allow members to post links.
