I'm not racist, I promise, I have white friends! Big Grin

http://health.yahoo.com/news/healthday/melanomaratessoaramongyoungerwomen.html

Skin cancer is on the rise among white women(down for white men) It has also been proven that sunscreen is inefective in some studies. I wish they would explain which attributes more to skin cancer, tanning beds or sunbathing.

We are going to the beach today, so I'll take note of who is using sun tanning lotion and who is using sun screen. Wink

I plan on wearing my sun visor hat, along with waterproof sunscreen.

What do you think, are we just too vain to care/worry about skin cancer?

I LOVE the sun and mostly worship it. However, I'm a big believer in sun screen, especially for my face. When the weather doesn't cooperate, I have a year round tanning salon membership. I don't like tan lines. 'tis true!

If you have fair skin and don't respect the sun, you're a fool. Plain and simple.

And no, sun screen alone doesnt cut it. In fact, I am quite sure that the recent rise in skin cancer cases is partly caused by sun screen. People believe they are safe just because they applied some lotion, and spend hours in the sun during the middle of the day.

There is a reason cultures in sunny areas apply siestas, wear long pants and sleeves and generally try to avoid the sun during the warmest hours of the day.

I don't fear the sun, but I don't take unnecessery risks either. That means: no sun bathing between 1000 - 1400 hours, I wear clothing that cover me if I plan to spend the entire day in the sun and I dont put my faith into sun screen.

All said and done though, I know people who spent a life time in the sun and came out fine. I know of others that generally avoided it and got skin cancer anyway. Seems to be the same way with many cancer forms. I know people that smoked their entire life and are fine. Other none smokers develop lung cancer in their thirties. Go figure.

I know a couple of black guys who got bad sunburns, so it isn't just white people who have to fear melanoma. I don't worry about it as much because I have a lot of nice, greasy Sicilian/Creole blood. Me tans up nice.

As a white person, what I fear the most, is the moon. A bright, silvery moon, it makes me do, crazy things..........some even call me a lunatic!

Well, black people don't get a free pass, themselves. We absorb more light (and heat) because of our darker skin.

I wear sunscreen. Even though I get close to blue (and my hair bleaches out to red LOL) I don't fool with the sun.

I live in a city with a high murder rate. I smoke and drink and don't exercise enough, and I work a high-stress job. The sun is the least of my worries....

I had a skin cancer spot removed from my shoulder about 5 months ago. No big deal. The Dr. said it was the good kind of skin cancer to have if there ever was one. And yes I use sun screen all the time.

I guess it is Gods punishment for women no longer wearing scarves or bonnets Wink

Buy yes, we are vain enough to hurt ourselves to look good (well fashionable at least), fx by wearing shoes that cripple out feet, jeans so tight they harm blood circulation, etc.

Ah well, call it evolution in action Roll Eyes

regards JakobA

PS: I never use sunscreen, It is icky and sticky.

ditto on loving the sun and, fortunately, my skin can handle it ... with sunscreen! However, my blonde mom burns in the shade, but my dad has some nice Cherokee blood in him which gives me a good base color. Yeaaa for dad!! Applause
