Yes one of those subjects.....in-laws!!! Not only do you have your own in-laws, but when you have grown children that get married, THEY have in-laws to deal with (at least in a lesser capacity for me....but you still deal with them to a certain degree).
Right at this moment I am not thinking too kindly toward my son's mother-in-law One downside of email is that this lady can email me (and I swear she doesn't think before she writes) at anytime. Of course, I don't want to say what I think, as then it would be likely that this (catty woman, supposedly Christian woman -- preacher's wife so you would expect her to be a "Christian" woman) would take it out on my son. (Probably doesn't help with the differences in religion) And I tried the "ignore" her emails, which works for a little while, but then she writes more or will call!!!!! Does anyone else experience this? (Thanks for listening......) Where really stupid people are concerned, especially relatives, this is how I work it. You have to lower your expectation. I make a conscious choice to change how I view them.
1) Even if you did tell them the truth, they are too stupid to get it, so it wouldn't work. Total waste of time and emotional energy. 2) Because of 1) above, I am forced to realize that rather than be angry with them, -- b-e-c-a-u-s-e they are soooo clueless, they really, really, really deserve my complete and unreserved PITY. 3) I just keep my heart right and concentrate on modeling the correct behavior for the stupid person -- it is always possible that someday they will have an epiphany and thank you. 4) If you take the high road, it won't be long before everyone else will realize that you are the person they would rather be around, come to for advice, etc. In other words, be the one who sets the standard -- it w-i-l-l draw others to you. All this enables me to stay above the fray and keep my attitude right, for everyone else's sake -- in your case, for your son's sake. Just my two cents. |

Mod Stetson Off
Wow, I must have been realllllly lucky. My parents and my wives parents loved each other, and my wife's parents thought I was the best thing that could happen to their daughter. My parents, when they met my wife, you could almost hear the "Thank God" echoing in their heads. When my Dad was in his last days after a stroke, the Navy brought me home from the Gulf to see him..... When we walked in the door to his bedroom, some of the last words my dad ever spoke were; "There's my beautiful girl", when he saw my wife..... I had to leave the room for a bit.... didn't want him to see me cry. My wife to this day, and that was 10 years ago, tears up at the thought....... Sorry to hijack your thread, but I saw this and immediately just thought about how blessed we were, and are..... Sorry aggie, but I am very blessed to have great "inlaws's inlaws".
My 2 daughter in laws and 1 son in law are wonderful people and their parents are all pretty decent to deal with. |

I like my daughter-in-law fine...just don't care for her mother. Her dad is a preacher, but he is not pushy or condescending. I imagine a big part of it is that her "poor" daughter married a Catholic instead of someone "she" had picked out from the Church of Christ. (likely the rub) Plus she lives in her very small town with the blinders on. But I'll continue to do what SgtSchaffersmom suggested and take the high road and when I simply can't stand it, like a lady....I'll go set up some beer cans on the fence and blast away. Ohhhhhhhhhhhh GAG! Been there and done that one personally...I a Catholic and he a Pentecostal. Ohhhh the horrors of our transgression.
Hehehehehe...stock up on wadcutters. Much cheaper when you want to blow a few hundred rounds of steam off. On a serious note aggie...it doesn't always get better no matter what high road you take. My mother was always the epitome of ladylike behavior...very genteel. My MIL use to write her about her "daughter's behavior". Grrrr...my repugnant behavior was...I went to early mass on Sunday mornings BEFORE we went to his church. My poor mother would just wring her hands. It took me 13 years and his death to finally unload. Trust me, I DID unload. I laid a bomb that shook their entire foundation and I have never regretted it. I should have done it 8 years sooner. You can be a lady, but still drive a point home with the full impact of a bayonet. |
