CRS calculates cost of U.S. troop presence in Afghanistan

The United States spends about $3.6 billion a month in Afghanistan, according to data provided by the Congressional Research Service.

The average cost per month is calculated at an average 51,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan, but that number likely will go higher with the 68,000 troops the Obama administration already is planning on having in that country, and could double if President Barack Obama backs a reported request from Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the commander in Afghanistan, to send as many as 40,000 more troops to the country.

The cost of sending one U.S. soldier in Afghanistan for one year is $1 million versus an estimated $12,000 for an Afghani soldier, according to Steve Daggett, a specialist with the Congressional Research Service. Those numbers fall within the calculations that the Obama administration has been using. The Obama administration is calculating $1 billion per 1,000 troops deployed to Afghanistan.

Do you honestly believe that being in Afghanistan will prevent “a little can of sunshine” from opening here?

You want cherry or grape?

You think AQ is ruding unicorns and handing out Ice cream cones now?

Given the means, they would make this country a radiological waste dump in a heartbeat.

I question why the study came out, its motivation. Is it to make the idea of Cut and Run more palatable to the Masses by saying the Peace dividend can be spent on healthcare?

Of course an Afghani Soldier is cheaper, he's already home and has crap for gear and a cheap as dirt AK, no body Armor, no indigenous CAS assets.......

Well, the study was authored back in May, and was apparently requested to coincide with discussions of the appropriations bill that would fund operations.

Answer me this - if you are about to write a check for a major purchase, is not acceptable to ask how much it iws going to cost, if only so you can write the amount in the little box?

I think the cost calculations will give Obbie the tool he wants to pull out of Afgan and the rest of the middle east under the guise of "peace and tranquility". The Tallies and the Alq'ies will agree to peace talks and Obbie will (pre-arranged of course)declare "Peace in our Time", pull out and then watch the world go to h*** in a handbasket and have us handpumping oil from the streets after a rain to keep us mobile.

If they are looking for savings, have them start in Iraq.

I understand the Iraqi parliament missed the deadline to pass an elections law needed to hold parliamentary polls slated for January, raising worry they could be delayed. They need to be sequestered until they get their collective **** together. Then we pull out and finish the work in Afghanistan.

The way that the IA and the IPs are conducting themselves, in some cases setting up check points and harrassing US Troops and contractors, I say we let them have at it, go ahead and pull the majority of our troops out, leave a contingency force in place, and as Cleg said, get the job done in Afghanistan.

Gun

Foreign wars are expensive.

Maybe if the politicians had enough sack to actually close all those unecessary bases here in CONUS, instead of catering to their constituants just to curry votes, than there would be enough money to adequately fund the GWOT.

JMHO

Just ranting but, everytime we get in a conflict, the political powers prevent our finest military personnel from doing what they went there to do, kick ass and take no prisoners! So, with all this money, which we don't have, continually spent on a friggin war that is going on EIGHT YEARS with no outcome! WTF! I thought the point was to WIN! Let's rewind for a moment...if the Bush admin would have stuck with objective #1, get UBL, the war would have ended three years tops! But no, the Bush admin had to go and remove Saddam Hussein, which, was a STUPID mistake.
Thanks for letting me rant.

JMHO, I could be wrong...
