She is a comedienne and it was a joke…

Kathy Griffin's Jesus remark cut from Emmy show

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Comic Kathy Griffin's "offensive" remarks about Jesus at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards will be cut from a pre-taped telecast of the show, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences said on Tuesday.

Griffin made the provocative comment on Saturday night as she took the stage of the Shrine Auditorium to collect her Emmy for best reality program for her Bravo channel show "My Life on the D-List."

"A lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus," an exultant Griffin said, holding up her statuette. "Suck it, Jesus. This award is my god now."

Asked about her speech backstage a short time later, an unrepentant Griffin added, "I hope I offended some people. I didn't want to win the Emmy for nothing."

The speech drew fire from a leading Roman Catholic group, the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, which condemned Griffin's remarks as "obscene and blasphemous."

"It is a sure bet that if Griffin had said, 'Suck it, Muhammad,' there would have been a very different reaction," Catholic league president Bill Donohue said in a statement posted on the group's Web site. He called on TV academy president Dick Askin to denounce Griffin's "hate speech" and on Griffin to apologize.

An edited version of the Creative Arts Emmys is set to air on cable television's E! Entertainment Network on Saturday, the night before the live Fox network broadcast of the main Primetime Emmy Awards.

"Kathy Griffin's offensive remarks will not be part of the E! telecast," an academy spokeswoman said on Tuesday. An "abbreviated version" of her acceptance speech will air, instead, she said.

Griffin's reaction to the imbroglio, according to a statement issued by her publicist: "Am I the only Catholic left with a sense of humor?"

Linkto the most unbiased source I could find which I’m sure sure someone will still find reason to have issue with because it is owned somewhere by somebody...

I've seen the tape. I got the joke and thought it was hilarious.

I also found it funny that no one recognized that she was being satirical towards those who consistently use the name of Jesus for self-promotion at events such as these. The irony being that the person who usually plays the award ceremony "shout out to Jesus" card normally has nothing in their personal life to do with being a "good Christian" to begin with.

You have GOT to be kidding....... She can say what she wants, and saying that Jesus had nothing to do with the award would be fine..... BUT, S*ck it Jesus was WAYYYY over the line.

The Bill Donahue had a VERY good point, I quote:

quote:
"It is a sure bet that if Griffin had said, 'Suck it, Muhammad,' there would have been a very different reaction," Catholic league president Bill Donohue said in a statement posted on the group's Web site.

The OUTRAGE over the same remark using the name of Muhammad would have been swift, and probably violent.

ADDED: And the Academies reaction had nothing to do with Political Correctness. They thought, and rightly so, that if they had aired that, the fallout would have been heavy, and would have adversely affected funding.

Two points:

1. John Lennon beat Kathy Griffin to this particular hot seat about 40 years ago. SSDD.

2. Religion, in general, raises hackles when brought up in any public forum. People these days are both way too easily offended and way too rude, so the old admonition to avoid politics and religion at parties is not bad advice.

Props to KG, though - she's done the USO trip to Iraq thing.

By the way, if it was intended as satire, the intent would still be to ridicule.... or at the least make fun of those who do have a belief in God.

At the very least, she exhibited very poor judgment in what she thought would be funny and acceptable.

Main Entry: sat·ire
Pronunciation: 'sa-"tI(-&)r
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle French or Latin; Middle French, from Latin satura, satira, perhaps from (lanx) satura dish of mixed ingredients, from feminine of satur well-fed; akin to Latin satis enough -- more at SAD
1 : a literary work holding up human vices and follies to ridicule or scorn
2 : trenchant wit, irony, or sarcasm used to expose and discredit vice or folly

While I don't find Kathy Griffin necessarily funny, her remark was pretty clever. In one fell swoop, she criticized the hypocrites who publicly thank God or Jesus for their good fortune then turn around to lead the type of lives completely contrary to what is taught in the Bible. She only said outloud what many of these so-called Jesus-thankers really mean.

There are a lot of what-ifs with this incident. What if it was Chris Rock? What if it was a remark about Islam made by Chris Rock? The list is endless. My point is that Kathy Griffin is being attacked because she's a white woman and is perceived to be an easy target. Or at least an easier target than, say, David Chappelle, Chris Rock or Eddie Murphy. I point these individuals out because they've routinely made statements infinitely more offensive than anything Kathy Griffin could utter, but they get the free pass because nobody wants to offend them. My point is that either offensive language applies to everyone across the board or it does not.

Again, I'm not a Kathy Griffin fan, but I think she is being treated unfairly in this little incident.

This just confirms that "political correctness" and "thought police" tactics are a facet of the religious right--NOT the left.

That's funny..... The network (hardly a conservative organization) decided to not air something which it felt would offend a majority of viewers..... Not to protect their delicate sensitivities, but to PROTECT THEIR PROFITS.

As far as the; "political correctness" and "thought police" tactics, that you speak of..... why is it that when someone responds to the perceived voice of the PEOPLE, it is censorship and PC run amok?

Your ire should be directed not at the "right", but at the Liberal Network that sold you out for the almighty dollar.

Don't agree with this? Then educate me, and tell me for what reason other than the dollar the network would cut that segment.........

I completely disagree.

I saw it as intent to ridicule the very people who hypocritically humble themselves and profess a "glory to God" with the mass-media audience in their face, but then go right back to their own self-serving lives the minute the camera is turned off.

Paris Hilton (knowing the world was watching) told Larry King that she "found Jesus" while she was in jail. I'm still waiting to see how it's changed her life. I'm sure her Christian missionary work is going swimmingly.

Kathy Griffin is a topical comedienne who uses public entertainment figures and current events as her subject matter. I'm pretty sure that Paris' recent epiphanies had a lot to do with the comment.

It really does it for me too... I've got a thing for vivacious redheads, though.

I want to be very clear, especially to those who are accusing me of being the moral police:

I think that the Academy of (whoever) that are in charge of the Emmys have every right to edit out the comment made by Kathy Griffin. Ultimately, the content of that show is their property, the advertisers are theirs, and they have the right to have it broadcast as they see fit. I do not see this as Political Correctness gone overboard since the show is privately owned. I also don't see what the big deal is since, the comment is going to be edited and Kathy Griffin is not fighting to force them to air it.

Silent_Surface, I don't know how much you know about Kathy Griffin and her comedy, but about 90% of it is directed at the "hollywood subculture." Her show is about her farcical attempts to be seen with and photographed with the "A" list celebrities and her observations on their rediculous lives from the point of view of an ambitious everywoman.

Nothing in her comedy points towards this being a joke about christians, or one aimed at offending believers. A thinking person with a passing familiarity with her past skewering of celebritites and celebrity-worship culture can understand that this joke was solely directed at the hollywood whackos, not mom and pop catholic on the street.

Hell, Kathy herself is Catholic.

exactly! would you volunteer to be one of the first bound and shot? Please.....

to compare what we are talking about to North Korea is about as lame as your line of thinking. I know you want to embolden our enemies(great job so far) but this line of thinking is nonsense. For me to think they would take away your freedom of speech is as about as dumb as you believing protesting will get our troops home. The reason I started posting yesterday is because you bafoons keep putting up pictures like this. HEY DOPPY STOP BEING PART OF THE PROBLEM!!

The kind that are concerned that, within this world, there still exists the type of people who have no problem allowing their government to take its citizen's liberties away.

ive been reading your post for about 6 months now and havent said one statement to you. You lifestlye is quite evident to all.

Hey newsflash jr, some of us love Jesus and unborn babies. Just like I dont think nazis have the right to scream their hate mongering I dont believe you have the right to scream yours.

Everytime you post something negative you empower those who seek to detroy us then jump behind the first admendment. You change nothing, except the willingness of our enemies to fight longer. Your not in the fight right now so shut up! go vote but other than that just shut up! that picture you posted,,,, your way leads down that road more than mine does.

Just please to all your kind shut up for the next 5 years and let us win this thing!

In Officer Candidate school they teach us that our enemies know they cant beat us in combat, even terriost, but they do know the will of the American people is nearsighted. They teach us,,, you listening ,,, they teach us our enemies know they will win if they wait long enough. This is written down in a freaking book. And your response is,,,,,, give me liberty or give me death, You sir may get your wish if liberals ever figure out how to get in power.
