ST. PAUL, Minn. – Republican Norm Coleman conceded to Democrat Al Franken in Minnesota's contested Senate race on Tuesday, hours after a unanimous state Supreme Court ruled the former "Saturday Night Live" comedian should be certified the winner.

Coleman announced his decision at a news conference in St. Paul, bringing an end to the a nearly eight-month recount and court fight over an election decided by only a few hundred votes.

"The Supreme Court has made its decision and I will abide by the results," Coleman told reporters outside his St. Paul home.

Coleman, appearing relaxed and upbeat, said he had congratulated Franken, was at peace with the decision and had no regrets about the fight, which started almost immediately after the Nov. 4 election.

"Sure I wanted to win," said Coleman, who called the ruling a surprise. "I thought we had a better case. But the court has spoken."

He declined to talk about his future plans, brushing aside a question about whether he would run for governor in 2010.

Franken's victory will give Democrats control over 60 Senate seats, the number needed to overcome any Republican filibusters to health care, energy, or other legislation they or the Obama administration is seeking...

Well let's hope he's a better senator than a radio talk show host.

God, his show was snoozer.

I just hope that the Democrats use their power wisely and don't just steamroll the Republicans because they now can. And I really hope that the Republicans begin to come to the table with plans of compromise so that they can be heard. Their constant proclamation of NO needs to become "Lets talk about it".

When you've got the muscle, don't be afraid to use it. Screw watering down good progams hoping they'll go along with it. I hope the Dems have the balls to stomp 'em into the dirt when they get really stupid. The Repubs need to start looking to the future instead of hoping for a resurrection of the past.

Now the true circus begins.

If congress was corrupt and a joke before, now it takes the cake.

BTW, Congrats Al, you cheated better then the Coleman guy getting votes from no where.
I mean that for real. They both were "finding" votes weeks after the elections were over.

All the months of recounting, legal challenges, let alone millions spent (by both sides) were just a side show then. Amazing

Good programs? Name one? But I hope the Dem's follow your plan.. We'll be a bankrupt, 3rd world nation..and the dem's will be dead forever.

Honestly, if Rush had won a seat I'd be rubbing it in..but I'll also be pretty shamed that he was an actual voice in the party.

I am glad it is finally over and hopefully Minn. will see the error of their ways. As one here has said, congress is a joke. Let us hope the comedy continues in the house and maybe, just maybe, America will wake up and see the self serving phoney basturds for what they really are....... and that goes for "Both" sides of the fence.
During your next state and local elections let us send a message to these folks and vote for the unknown... surely they cannot do any worse then the pieces of crap we have now. I mean, they pass thousand page bills orvernight that they do not read - or understand... all they do is bicker along partisan lines and the wishes of us, "The People" are ignored to fit their own agenda(s)....... noper, let Al make a mockery of his position.
Then again he may just take it seriously, but I do not believe it will be that way.

Then they will self destruct the same way the Republicans have done. With more and more Americans claiming Independent and Moderate the political parties have got to move in that direction as well.

For the most part I see the only ones resisting this as being the "True Conservatives" who voice distain for any Republican that takes a moderate stance, and refers to the others as "RINO"(s).

Remember the Republicans stood at this very point only a few years ago and got to full of themselves and turned off a large portion of the American public.

The people are looking for bi-partisan government. Fair exchange is never considered robbery and that "all or nothing" mentality is not acceptable today in my opinion.

The people are looking for anything that works that will get this country back on track. They didn't vote bipartisan or the Dems wouldn't have 60 and they won't in 2010 either. Bipartisan is only possible when the other guy doesn't reply with "screw you" every time you reach out to him.

The Republicans never attempted bipartisanship when they had the power and I'm not saying the Dems should copy their M.O. I am saying that if the Repubs maintain their current attitude then the Dems should not hesitate to pimp slap the jerks down Broadway.

Most of the present crop of Repubs consistently mistake kindness for weakness but have a definite respect for power, so I say leave the door open for compromise but don't be afraid to use what the voters have given you. Work with the ones you can work with and screw the rest. Their M.O. is to destroy the Presidency and America if it will kick them back into the power seat. Dems don't need to court that kind of negativity.

As an Independent I sometimes look at the Republican party and feel sorry for them. When they had power they cried that the Dems kept them from using it in a positive way. Then when they don't have it they then say that they can't stop the Dems. From everything I have seen and read the Republicans all but claim impotence against those damn Democrats!

And now all they have is a burning desire for President Obama to fail. That is all they have and all they have brought to any table is a resounding NO!!!!! I mean really, they proposed a budget with no damn numbers on it! What is that exactly!?

But I do hope that they find a voice with a larger vocabulary. They self destruct by even allowing Limbaugh to become not only the voice, but the fat ugly face of their party. And Cheney didn't make it any better because Americans do not, absolutely do not like Cheney. So now what inmate is in charge of the assylum?

They can pretty much hang it up for next year and unless Obama fails miserably they can also hang up 2012. As a competitor I would hate going into a match knowing that my only hope of winning is if my opponent falls and breaks something getting into the ring.

But didn't Americans use the democratic process and voted these people in? Oh I guess it is Deja Vu all over again like when the Democrats cried foul in the Bush/Gore election and I believe they were told to get over it and quit eating sour grapes.

It seems as though Republicans have a hard time understanding that the majority of Americans were tired of them and voted them out. The Republicans approval rating at this point is what 29/30%. And then I've seen the American people who do not think, see, hear, or believe as their Republican brethren declared stupid, ignorant, uninformed and even unpatriotic. They just seem to have a hard time making friends and influencing people. That is why if the Democrats don't follow the Republican playbook they could maintain power for quit some time.

Crying foul?

Pres Bush and Congress passed several bills that were democrats’ babies. I respond to a poster about ramming it down our throats.

And you say they cried foul. What are you comparing?

Let us hope that by the next elections we still have a country left, not a tolerant or not so tolerant dictatorship. When Franken walks down the aisle to be sworn in they should play "Send in the Clowns". Hope the minnesotans enjoy the next 5 years, they asked for it.

He'll probably end up being the second worst thing that's ever happened to the Democrat party...Obama being "the One" (I wouldn't care, except the rest of our system could get dragged down with them). Amazing watching these Democrat legislators surrendering up their power to the prez and his czars without question. They think they're doing something great by rubber-stamping every bill without reading it, after all they know better what's good for us; bloody fools. The irony is that they're rushing headlong into marginalizing themselves just as badly as the Republicans. Care to guess what kind of representation we'll be left with after that, (as if we really have much left now)?

The have and had plans, but they get locked out of committee.Amds removed or procedurally blocked. And when they have press conf's the press is UA.

As far as MN.
More people voting than actually living in areas and all happened to vote for Smalley, got to love it.

Smalley makes a great addition to the libs/dems and that circus they're running.

Doesnt matter if another idiot-Reid tries to silence him or not, Smalley is loose cannon and whackjob, basically he is another McKinney. Let the Goat Rope begin.

Valid and good point. I agree, I hope he does better. I have my doubts though. I think he will be an eager beaver wanting to satify and fit in with his fellow democrats. That alone doesn't show leadership but rather a follower.

I do hope I am wrong though.

Unlike the Repub party the Demo party has never been able to control their members in Congress and IMO they never will have enough party discipline to do so.
