A day to celebrate and not fight amongst ourselves. So I'm standing down and getting ready to fight with a hot stove, oven and grill. The war resumes on Saturday--that is all.... Big Grin

Y'know, now I'm curious. Most of us know about both the "Christmas Truce" of 1914 and the Battle of Gettysburg, which ended on July 3rd. What would have happened if the Union and Confederate forces would have faced each other in an undecided battle the following day...?

I was wondering when there'd be a thread like this. Happy Independence Day.
I wouldn't mind being up there, even just to visit, for that.

You forget, they did. Vicksburg surrendered on the 4th of July, 1863. The Confederate commander was a Northerner who stated that he could get the best terms for the city if they surrendered on that day.

The city of Vicksburg did not celebrate the 4th of July again until 1944.

A happy and safe 4th of July weekend to all, tempered only by remembrance of those serving in harm's way on our Nation's behalf in far and distant places.

Father God, be with us this day as we celebrate the birth of our great nation. But even more importantly, to me, is the safety of our brave warriors who are away from their families during this holiday.
