I found this result shocking. Granted, the result only applies to folks who hang out on mil.com an decided to respond to this poll, but still very, very scary.
-------------------------------- Created: Wednesday, September 19, 2007 Should atheists and pagans be afforded the same rights as Christians, Jews, or Muslims? Hell, no. American money doesn't read "In God We Trust" for nothing. 35% Yes. It's time the Jesus freaks got a grip and stopped acting like the Taliban with their religious policing. 65% |

They say there are no athiests in a fox hole. But then again who are they?

I don't care what people believe or don't believe so long as they leave me alone.

THe poll is nothing more that some blow hard spewing his anti-Christian bias, so the results are skewed and invalid. I'm a Christian, not a "JESUS FREAK" and I don't care what people beleive, don't believe or whatever. THis is America, relgious fredom is right there in the 1st. Amendment.

If the divided were a branch of the military, Military.com would be its "special forces" unit. |

Basic Training |
"No atheists in foxholes" is simply another urban myth. My guess is that the percentage of agnostics, atheists, pagans, etc. in the military is fairly representative of the greater population. The percentage may change in combat conditons but probably not significantly. When I first entered the military ('55), you were required to state a religious preference and it was stamped on your dogtags. Additionally, woe to the person who did not state a religious preference (denomination) as even in basic training, we were divided up to be addressed by the respective chaplains. Few agnostics, atheists, or whatever would have deliberately chosen to "stand out". In my case, "Protestant" was entered and remained that way on my military records and dogtags for 32 years, much simpler than going through the fallout of admitting to being an agnostic. Thinking back, I am hard pressed to recall any superior, either as enlisted, or officer, asking me what my religion was and that includes in combat. Of course the chaplains would ask the wounded and/or read the dog tags. No doubt there were and are many "atheists in foxholes". Mustang |

---------------------- I was a bit taken aback by the wording of the poll choices, too. But that's the poll right here on mil.com. DOn't get all uppity about it, though. If you're not a "Jesus freak" and you support religious freedom protections of the First Amendment, then you're not the kind of person the 65% are worried about. But face it; the ones who DO take issue with patrotic Americans that are atheists and don't give a rat's azz about the First Amendment do often fall into the "Jesus freak" category. No different from Islamic extremists in ideology, although not as violent - yet. This message has been edited. Last edited by: nurse_attorney, |

ARMY FORUMS MODERATOR |
I was somewhat religious in the military but I did not wear it on my sleeve. Some people wear it on their sleeve and some people do not.
Because of the regimented / disciplined environment in the military a lot of soldiers, sailors and airmen stand up for the underdog. I attribute the poll results to that more than anything else. You can't look at someone and know how religious they are and when people are in a group they will say they are not religious to fit in with the peer group. There are also different definitions of what constitutes religious as well. I have to tell you though, you go on guard duty with someone at 2:00 a.m. and ask someone without a crowd around and you will be surprised at how many athiests and agnositics profess a faith or pull out a scapular medal on you. It might not be strong or it might be confused but it is there. I have found people are the most honest with themselves on guard duty when they are bored sh*tless. It's another mystery of life why that duty is so thought provoking and soul searching when your in the Infantry but it is. |

I really don't care what religion people have in the military as long as they can shoot their weapon in the right direction when they are around me!
although - every Sunday on the war room floor they would have to endure a prayer from the Chaplain - who surprisingly was never an "in your face" kind of guy. |

Sure there are Atheists in Foxholes
But apparently a lot of people took it seriously when Bush sr. made his gaffe about atheists: "I don't know that atheists should be considered citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God." Sad that. "Good is better than bad cause its nicer" Mammy Yokum (as related by Al Capp) |

Well I'm a Christian. I see myself as godly, not a Jesus Freak. The one thing I know is that no matter what all people are created equal. I think I heard that somewhere before?
An Atheist is the same as the rest of us. Freedom of Speech,, Freedom of Religion. Those are given to us in this great nation. I will fight just as hard for an Atheist's right to be an Atheist as I will for my right to be a Christian. That I will fight for my God. |

Well, I'm a JESUS FREAK and I am proud to be one.
The way I figure it is simple: if you choose a life that ends when you die - then so be it - that's your choice. But the reality is that one day you will die - and then what choice have you got. You believe the myth that there is nothing else after here - you are going to be in for a rude awakening for an eternity... I figure that's a gamble that I am not willing to take - I'll fold that hand, believe that Jesus is just who he claimed to be, understand that there is more to life than what we see here - and can't wait until the next phase when I am finally outta here! |

Hardly. Mil.com would likely be the psych ward at the post/base hospital...not the nurses or techs, either, but the patients. The editorial staff would probably get conscientious objector status. |

When I joined They asked my pref and I said Methodist because thats what I was baptized as. I was a military brat baptized by an Army Chaplain with a glass eye that jumped in at Normandy, he was a grunt turned Chaplain, I guess he found religion in a foxhole. Anyway I have met a lot like them. But the next time I got a set of ID tags I changed it to no pref. my reasons being I felt if I needed to go to church any house of god would do.
