My company offered me $250,000 to accept a one-year posting to Afghanistan. That kind of serious coin made me consider it for a minute - until my wife cracked up and said "For Pete's sake, you can't even go camping without an air mattress, a fan and a folding recliner!" Big Grin

You know that look a woman gets when she wants sex? Neither do I.

Well, I've been in many areas where I'm not issued a firearm and where the locals frown on it. But that doesn't stop someone who feels it necessary to have a little insurance. There is only an issue when you have to use it, and THEN you probably don't care about the issues because you'ld have been dead otherwise.

You have to make up your own mind and are responsible for your own life.

I don't know how old you are, or how whipped you might be...but you're a sucker for not taking that job, the living conditions while not perfect are laughably luxurious for contractors...

Actually, I stepped away from the command pipeline in the Navy and retired because I have three kids who need their dad. A quarter-mil is tempting, but...

Sounds like your wife was a little nicer to you than my wife was to me when I was offered a job.

I have a question. I lost my job after 15 years there. I am 48 yrs old on oct. 1. I have no degrees or skilled trades but am considering going over to Iraq for a DOD job if I can get one. My question is what kind of job could I get & what would the pay be for the year? Who would be the best contractors to work for. I have been looking around here on the web & have seen mixed feelings about a few of them. I am willing to learn. I have been out of work for 2 months & cannot seem to get a job anywhere. I live near Ann Arbor Michigan. I sold my boat for way less then it was worth just to pay bills. I heard about these kind of jobs from a friend who is now a major in the marines & did two tours of duty over there. Any help will be appreciated.

desperately seeking work

Unless you were at Ft. Benning through Aug-Dec '05, no. I just woke up, and it's the same thing. Same old stuff is happening. There has to be some half assed outfit that is willing to pick up some guy off the streets for this. I've even pondered saving my own money and just going there. I doubt that would work though. I need some kind of back up if that was to happen.

I guess I'll just sit here and watch it all go down. If anyone knows of a company that would be great for me, or willing to take me, with weapons, please, help.

I've looked up the training courses at blackwater, etc... and I figure with that under my belt? I don't know.[/QUOTE]There's a lot more going on than just that.. an outfit that seems impressive to me is USAID.. they are doing a lot of things in A-stan that don't involve shooting someone in the face, but will ultimately secure the country might wanna check their website.. they list job openings..

KBR finally called me after a few months and offered me a gig in Kuwait. Money not bad, but the no firearms and no booze thing is just too much and the wife threatened divorce, so Kuwait is out. Wink

I had an offer for one of these deals, mine included a 25K sign on bonus up front and the 250K over 12 months with extension and /or follow on to Europe or just exit. A Buddy working for a sister Company had 2 of their workers waxed by a road side bomb 9 months into the gig, knowing that and looking into the face of my 10 month old grandbaby made the decision easy.
