Back away from Elvis. Do it. Now. As an actor, I doubt he really played a soldier for more than ten minutes before morphing into a musician--blame the scriptwriters. But we Spearheaders will always remember Elvis as a real soldier and one of our own.... |

Not a real anti-war guy, but I did enjoy "Gardens of Stone" with James Caan, Angelica Huston and James Earl Jones.
If you've never seen it, it's well worth the rental. Other fav's were "The Boys of Company C" (saw it right before I went to Basic Training in 1978), "Full Metal Jacket" (met R. Lee Ermey in Chicago a coupla years ago, GREAT guy!), "Kelly's Heroes", "Dirty Dozen", "Patton", the list goes on... Carpe Debier: Seize a Lager! |

I didn't actually participate in that one, so I guess you could say I missed it...or were you attempting to make a point regarding the movie? |

Don't know how "real" he was, but did see where he had scratched his name on the back of an ammo bunker at Koppern Ammo Dump in Germany (1971), along with about a hundred other GIs who snuck back there to take a leak while pulling guard, just like I did. Made him seem a little more human and mortal at least - - Yep, Spearheader - Recon/Tanker here - - Jim Hutton in Green Berets (tall skinny young ding dong scrounger) was about as believable as Santa Claus playing for the Lakers. |

Come on now, Elvis did play a roll as a U.S. Soldier in "GI Blues" but before he ever made that movie he wore that uniform as a United States Soldier.. So come on and show a little bit of respect for our fellow Veteran. Where some big stars did what they could to avoid the draft, when Elvis got drafted he fell into formation with the rest, he pulled his share of K.P. and guard duty and pulled all his own weight until he was Honorably discharged in 1964. What is the history of Elvis Presley's military career? Elvis Aron Presley entered the United States Army at Memphis, Tennessee, on March 24, 1958, and then spent three days at the Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, Reception Station. He left active duty at Fort Dix, New Jersey, on March 5, 1960, and received his discharge from the Army Reserve on March 23, 1964. During his active military career Mr. Presley served as a member of two different armor battalions. Between March 28 and September 17, 1958, he belonged to Company A, 2d Medium Tank Battalion, 37th Armor, stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. During this assignment he completed basic and advanced military training. Mr. Presley's overseas service took place in Germany from October 1, 1958, until March 2, 1960, as a member of the 1st Medium Tank Battalion, 32d Armor. For the first five days of that period he belonged to Company D of the battalion, and thereafter to the battalion's Headquarters Company at Friedberg. While in Germany Mr. Presley wore the shoulder sleeve insignia of the 3d Armored Division. |

So Elvis served with A Company, 2/37 Armor, which was at Ft. Hood at the time? Cool! In 1970, I served in C Company, 2/37th at Furth, Germany. The King and I have a connection! |

As to Pelvis Elvis never was much of a fan of his hardly remember watching one of his movies completely through to the end, and since I don't listen to musack I can't comment on his singing Don't care for any of the Baldwin boys don't mean their are bad or good just don't think they can play military roles As to the Sheens well Martian would have to top that list but Charlie would be a close second as bad for military roles Jane Fonda!!! well I had a cousin in Vietnam when that W****E was over there IF you wanted to start a thread about all time bad military films then the list would be so long we would hit the end of the internet before completeing the list Actually I've been ther ethis is what I found The End of the Internet Congratulations! This is the last page. Thank you for visiting the End of the Internet. There are no more links. You must now turn off your computer and go do something productive. Go read a book, for pete's sake. |

When "Saving Private Ryan" came out, I thought that was one of the best and most realistic depictions of war ever made. So when "The Thin Red Line" came out the same year, I foolishly made the mistake of expecting something similar to "Saving Private Ryan." What was I thinking? Worst actors? Everybody in "Thin Red Line" except one. And I can't believe I'm actually going to post this, but Sean Penn actually did a good job in "The Thin Red Line." Everyone else sucked. Talk about an ensemble cast!
But I have to mention that one of my favorite lines comes from the battalion commander portrayed by Nick Nolte when he tells a brown-nosing captain: "It's never necessary to tell me that you think I'm right. We'll just... assume it." |

Its hard to argue with Billy Zane in 'Valley of the Wolves, Iraq'. He plays an American officer in Iraq, who, among other things, kills Iraqi civillians in order to harvest their organs for sick Jews and Americans. It was a Turkish movie(their highest grossing film of all time) and also stars Gary Busey. Obviously they did the movie knowing most Americans would never see it.
I only heard about it because I was in Germany at the time, and due to the large Turkish population, we were warned to steer clear from movie theaters that were playing it. After finding and watching it online, I will never watch another movie with these two( I am making an exception for Tombstone). wikipedia article on the movie |

Seizmore in both Pearl Harbor and Black Hawk Down. How he is not phased at all while everyone is running for cover and ducking and he just stands there while bullets are flying.
I guess he was alright in Private Ryan. Been there, Done that and I have the shots to prove it. |
