Dow Jones on 1/20/93 (the day Clinton took office): 3241.96
Dow Jones on 1/20/01 (the day GWB took office): 10587.59 Dow Jones at the start of business today: 11442.59 So.... every $1 you had in the market when Clinton took office became $3.27 by the time he left. Every $1 you had in the market when Bush took office is now worth $1.08. Figure in inflation.... and you lost a bundle under Bush. Two other numbers: Price for a barrel of oil the day Operation Iraqi Freedom began: $28 Price for a barrel of oil today: $142 It's as simple as that folks. I just posted two salient examples, and there are thousands more, from wage growth, to saving's rate, to real estate value, to the cost of health care, to the cost of groceries...and on, and on, and on....where the polcies and practices of the "wingnuts" have turned our economic conditions into a "soup sandwich". It's no wonder Repubs are "running scared". Edited to add: Make sure you have this handy the next time someone tries to tell you how good the Repubs are for our economy. Truth is....that throughout history, the Repubs have been an unmitigated disaster to our country. |

Immediate estimated economic costs of 9/11
Here is what the Congressional report said in part. "Terrorism and National Productivity The lasting economic effect of 9/11 will be of a different nature. Large amounts of resources are and will be committed to making production, distribution, finance, and communication more secure in the United States. Resources that could have been used to enhance the productive capacity of the country will now be used for security. Since it will take more labor and capital to produce a largely unchanged amount of goods and services, this will result in a slower rate of growth in national productivity, a price that will be borne by every American in the form of a slower rate of growth of per capita real income." September 2002 CRS Report 2004 CRS Report on the global impact with U.S. in perspective I know, this is a Wiki- link, but it is well sourced. The financial crisis to which you refer was a result of the 9/11 attacks, which was a result of the previous administration's failure to follow congressional recommendations to take UBL out. Clinton went on record with Larry King on September 4, 2002. ""I thought that my virtual obsession with him was well placed, and I was full of regret that I didn't get him," he said." CNN Larry King Interview with Clinton If you are going to analyze the issue, go all the way, don't just stop where you President Bush bash ends. |

Don't try to put this stuff on the Dems, who barely had a majority for the past 18 months. This is all "your boys" mess, but I can understand, since I don't think Repubs have ever been held accountable ever in their lives. Oh, except that one time back in 1930 when they controlled all three branches of Government and drove us into the Great Depression. I think they spent about 50 years in the wilderness for that one. Don't you just love history? It has such a neat way of repeating itself. Not to worry though. With a filibuster proof majority in the Senate, close to two thirds in the House, and the Presidency....The Dems and the American people can go about the business of cleaning this "effing" mess up. Do try to stay out of the way. |

And yet...at a time when FRD would have demanded sacrifice and told us "we have nothing to fear, but fear itself", or when Kennedy challenged us to "go to the moon", or Truman said; "I don't care the difficulty, the military will be integrated", or when Lincoln said; "But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate -- we can not consecrate -- we can not hallow -- this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced."..... but no At that time in history. When Americans would have crawled naked through broken glass....We were told to "go shopping"! I guess that is what passes for "leadership" to repubs This message has been edited. Speaking of Kenndey ... "Advisers had convinced both Dillon and Kennedy that a tax cut was needed to bolster the economy. After the fall elections, Kennedy gave a speech to a business group in New York in which he called for making the kind of tax cuts that would stimulate private investments and "reduce the burden on private incomes and the deterrents to private initiative which are imposed by our present tax system." John Kenneth Galbraith, a liberal Kennedy adviser who dissented from the advice his fellow economists usually offered Kennedy, called it the "most Republican speech since McKinley." Link |

You know, there's an extraordinary level of personal "put downs" on here from personal issues such as political affiliation or philosophy, service component or rank ... one member here even criticized one of my graduate schools as somehow "inferior" in a rather odd way of trying to diminish an opinion. What we write and opine on here ultimately means nothing and goes nowhere in actual problem solving in any issue we debate. Each individual's point of action is in his own community -- that's where he can influence a national policy or issue through his elected officials or local action.
My point in all of this? We are entering a downturn in this country that none of us has experienced or endured in our lives. The economy is truly becoming very frightening with increasing unemployment, middle income wages and salaries becoming more stagnant while taxes are still increasing, and the stock market has tumbled this year to a percentage loss in June not apparently seen since the Great Depression. Major financial "houses" continue to suffer exponential losses that affect our ability to get credit that drives all facets of the economy, and there's even fears that General Motors could collapse. All of this is exacerbated by the incomprehensible increase in the price of oil, the "lifeblood" of our economy and ability We have an unimaginable national debt of nearly $10 trillion and annual budget deficits this decade have ranged in $300 - $400 billion. Our educational system is still floundering, immigration has become a "hot button" after decades of benign neglect. We are subject to more invasive security at multiple levels in efforts to protect the nation from further Sep 11th - type attacks, and these ultimately restrict your individual level of freedom despite your thoughts otherwise. And of course, we are still pouring billions of dollars -- and lives -- into a clearly difficult venture in Iraq. Meanwhile domestically, we imprison more citizens both in total number and in proportion to population than any other nation, costing an estimated $56 billion annually. And our transportation infrastructure is rapidly aging and in need of repair and replacement at costs we cannot fathom or likely afford at this point. And obviously we are facing an ecological dilemma unprecedented in recorded human history that could literally imperil human life itself at worst and which will alter our quality of life at best and for many, will drastically affect their access to sufficient food and water. Whoever occupies the Oval Office in January will need the moral support of the nation to succeed. I can only hope that all of our elected national representatives will see the urgent need to end the partisan bickering, not unlike that experienced on this site, to work together on these astounding problems we collectively face as a nation. As Mr. Franklin observed during the American Revolution, "If we all don't hang together, then we will surely all hang separately." I think the challenges are daunting unlike any we've faced in our lives -- petty labels will not "cut it" in getting the solutions to maintain the standard of living and individual freedoms that we've all enjoyed and continue to expect. |

Perfect! I'll make a deal with you, since you seem to be so "enamored" with JFK. Join me in calling for a return to the top marginal rates under his tax-cut! Pssst! (Look it up) |
