Some of the topics floating are making me reflect for some reason. I've read where ppl say that bulletin boards have helped them become better debators IRL because of all the online practice. I wonder if the same could be true for having thicker skin IRL. I can be a sensitive person but I really do feel like this place has toughened me up a bit.

It's funny b/c there's this unspoken rule that when you're are a newbie you go thru some sort of intitiation process until you have proved yourself. I remember there were 3 posters who sorta chided me and gave me a hard time when I first came.

Don't ask me what the topics were, I just remember the names. f100kid goes by something different now, and he probably doesn't even remember as we get along well now. I just remember thinking, man why are these ppl so mean, why are they picking on me, do they have to cuss so much, why are they so nasty etc LOL.

Anyway, I was just wondering if I'm the only one that's come a long way when it comes to letting stuff roll off and not taking offense to everything imaginable. Maybe you haven't grown a thicker skin, maybe you lost some skin, or gained some perspective?

I don't think I've grown thicker skin. I think this place has become dumbed-down because all of the former "great" posters (the ones who could really get your blood boiling) are just gone.

There doesn't seem to be too many people left here who are capable of even quickening my pulse anymore.

I don't know about debating skill improvement but I do get entertainment.

I used to love back in the day when trolls appeared daily and there was a race to beat them down.

do you remember when the people's propagandist who posted as "ssssrrrs" spelled 1,000 different ways used to come in here and wreak havoc? We called him SARS... LMAO.

Yep....was a while ago for me but I got a bit of a reality check from a couple of people who aren't around these days. I found myself sitting back a reading mostly, to get to know people and I think that is a good way for newbies to go. Wink

I aslo recall a poser named "brasscat" who pretended to be some kind of cold war spy. He was entertaining and got crushed but cam back in multiple versions.

I remember I favored the 'in the news forum' for a long time over p/cp. I bonded with several posters and would laugh at/with them chewing on trolls. They are all gone nowFrown

I rarely see snipe anymore. Red_sleeves was one of my favs.

There was a guy named Alan whose screen name was 63DH30 who created a thread called "morning coffee" it was hidden away in some obscure location where the casual peruser would not find it. About 20 of us used to have a blast on that thread. As far as I can tell there is only one other besides me remaining from that thread.

The most bellicose people here don't have the balls to do the same thing in public with strangers. So how can one let the trash-talking here affect them? It's hollow.

Maybe (I'll at least entertain the possibility that it could be something as simple as that)... but sometimes I think it's that I wish I could find a worthy adversary.

That's how I am, what you read in my post...you'd hear out of me in person. I don't have much respect for those people I like to call "keyboard heroes" who get all bad from the safety of a keyboard.
