10 day warning (24 Nov 08) for disparaging comment about another member. Vighper |
On this matter (see example here - first post by RM444):
I agree that there are occasions where it is necessary for a moderator to edit or delete something that crosses the line (especially if it's questionably offensive); I myself have had portions of posts (mostly photos) deleted whenever a mod became concerned that it was close to the line - and I'm fine with that. However, I disagree with completely re-editing non-offensive posts (statements) and re-entering the moderator's personal warning as to the reason. 1. It confuses the reader into thinking that the content was written by the original poster - it's not until the end that the reader figures out that this is an edited comment by a moderator. 2. (more importantly) By deleting some or all of the original material, other posters are not provided the opportunity to see what "crossed the line" and are likely to make the same error without the example to learn from. This is especially so with commentary. 3. The post is rendered indefensible - the moderator can say whatever he or she wishes without fear of contradiction because the "offending" post has been partially or completely deleted. In my opinion - it gives readers the impression that the moderator is covering his or her tracks whenever there is a question as to whether or not he or she may have over-reacted. MY SUGGESTION: As long as the original content is inoffensive, I believe it should remain intact. If the moderator feels inclined to issue warning within that post, then the moderator should add their comments at the bottom (preferably in a different color. In this way, other posters can see for themselves what crossed the line (where not to tread), see for themselves the original content and each of the moderator's points as to what was wrong with it, and other members will be left with the impression that the moderator is playing above-board and allowing all to see what decisions were made and why. Additionally, if the moderator has no choice but to remove a portion of the original post another line (again in a different color) as to the reason would be appreciated... Example: "Offensive content removed by Mod123" |

Where are the Carriers? |
I am fine with mods doing their jobs.
Bubba has been nothing but professional with me over a couple of recent postings that caused a flap. I am not here to ruin anyones day. They do that well enough on their own. I enjoy the exchange with other military minds and I learn alot here. "Thank you, for your support." - Bartles & Jaymes |

Stuff like powdered soap in the showers aboard ship? Talking about scrotums on chins and tonsils being tickled? "HOW DARE YOU COME INTO MY HOUSE, YOU SON OF A B----!" Personally, I believe I mean the words I write. I really have a problem with anyone editing my work and reposting theirs as if it is mine - Moderator or not.
To the best of my knowledge this may be the first post I ever have "edited" by a moderator Deleting is one thing; editing is totally another. The originator of the thought is the only person who understood the thought and it's intent. Ask for clarification or delete it - but keep it honest and leave the poster's original work as they intended it to be or give them the courtesy of doing the edit. So make the best of this test, and don't ask why. It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time. It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right. I hope you had the time of your life. - Green Day |

When I say "Knock It Off", I mean "Knock It Off" |
Intent is sometimes the hardest thing to determine in what someone else posts.
I agree, the mods should maybe try to determine intent before editing or deleting what someone has posted. There are those posts that have only one meaning and need "editing" or deleting but for the most part everybody tries to keep within the boundaries, even though we s t r e t c h them from time to time..... I fully agree... But in cases where a moderator has felt the need to delete a portion of my post, I have just gone ahead and deleted the entire post. The issue for me was the original thought. If I have posted a particular photo with my words, it was because I felt the photo inspired a particular feeling. Without it, the context may have been changed from my original intent. I'd rather delete it myself than leave it in someone else's hands, altered to their desires of what they think is acceptable. |

Being a Mod is not a fun job. Look what happened a couple of days ago to DP, or PD or what ever Phoenix doesn't like to be called.
