Are we living in a pre-world war or pre-civil war period, where economic decline leads to domestic unrest and/or world war?

It seems clear that our position in the world has declined over the last ten years, in large part due to monetary regulators sleeping at the switch while the credit of the USA was ruined by speculators.

Most observers say we are in for hard times.

Sure would be interesting if the US was no longer able to buy vast quantities of cheap Chinese goods or overpriced Saudi oil. Just saying.
