off-track My dad wasn't the greatest, nor my step-dad; but my mom and grandmother helped make up for them as best they could. back on-track Happy Father's Day!! Without my daughter, my life would be a true waste of time. But for her appearance, I would probably have become a bitter, selfish man. Praise God for children. Some of us need them to become human. |

I like sharing this story about my dad to show what kind of dad I have.
Back in '89, I was at FLETC in GA for US Customs. I studied my butt off for the first test staying in all that weekend. Instead of properly studying the objectives, I was trying to memorize damn near everything. I ended up with a 73...70 was passing. I called my dad and told him I didn't see how I would make it through the academy. I felt like I would let him and all my family down. So this is what he told me..."Don, I figure either way I can't lose. If you make it through the academy, I will be so proud of you. If you don't, you can come home and I will have my son back." I ended up getting into a study group and passed the rest with ease. I will never forget the support my dad gave me and still does to this day. As for my role as a dad, I just try to follow in my dad's footsteps. Don Proud dad to a U.S. Marine(20) and my other son who's about to turn 14. |

Everybody hates me, Nobody loves me... |
My Dad, who wasn't the nicest person before he got saved, was short on advice, long on tolerance and allowed us room to make mistakes without making a big deal out of it.
Case in point: I wanted to drive a truck since I can remember, like he did, and he let me start driving his big truck when I was about 13 or so. By 16, he was sleeping behind me. (Bet y'all never knew that big truck passing you in the mid-60's had a kid at the wheel!) But, the FIRST time, he let me drive on a backroad between towns. He was sitting over in the jump seat and, as we neared the next town, he said, "Son, you better pull over and let me have it back." Ok. That means stop. Those old trucks had a V-shaped brake peddle, presumably for a two-footed emergency stop, but I didn't know that. Since it had a place for both feet, I assumed that meant I was to use them both. So....I rared back and stomped the peddle with both feet as hard as I could. Dad went flying, bouncing off the windshield and landing in a pile on the floorboard. The empty trailer jack-knifed to the right, leaving a trail of black marks on the road which I'll bet are still there. Had that been me, I'd have up come up out of that floor cussing a blue streak and reaching for the kid. Not Dad. He simply rubbed the knot on his head and said, "Well...Goddam son!" That was it! That was all the instruction I got about how to safely stop a truck. He's been gone now for 15 years. |
