All 50 states pressed congress and the supreme court to allow collection of sales tax on all retail sales on the internet. The supreme court finally ruled that "companies need to collect sales tax only if they maintain a "physical presence" - usually a store or warehouse - in the same state as the customer".
Round two has started. New laws in New York, Rhode Island and North Carolina will force retailers to collect state sales taxes for the first time on purchases from internet retailers. You do know that the Postal Service is losing billions of dollars yearly because (so they say) of email and online transactions. Won't be long before you have to put a stamp on that email. |

Think back a few years to some slick Governors like John Engler in Michigan scoring political points by lowering property taxes and offsetting what they couldn't borrow to make it up by...
...raising the state sales tax. Enter the internet, and the sales tax revenue from brick and mortar stores goes out the window. Dell's been charging sales tax on computer purchases shipped to some states--like Michigan--for several years now. Not really news... Now go a-way or I shall taunt you a second time! |

Do we really need daily delivery of mail anymore, especially with the junk that shows up? Monday/Thursday deliveries would suit me just fine - - How is it that we have to pay taxes on everything that moves, yet the internet gets to operate more free of expense and overs-sight than organized religion? Time to level the playing field a little and let them ante up - - Wandering and Wondering |
