RE: http://www.military.com/opinion/0,15202,154818,00.html
I don't know about all that?? Here in the Muncie, Indiana area, I have never had a problem finding work. Ever since I joined the military and check on my applications that I am in the military, I have not been able to find a job since. I have been told by a few secretaries that, " I didn't tell you this...hint hint.... but, you probably shouldn't have told him that you were in the military." In the last year and 1/2, I must have submitted around 150 to 200 resumes... so many resumes that I had to delete the archived responses and sent messages out of my read mail because I did not have enough room on my AKO mail to receive new mail. Its nto the resume because I get compliments on my resumes from most people I interview with. I tried a resume service and they told me that all they could do to my resume was shorten it but, it would take out alot of my skills and experiences. Employers here in this area dont hire military probably because they are afraid we are going to deploy on them and they will have to reserve our job for us. My only other option is to either request to deploy, or try and figure out a way to raise funds to start my own business as a wireless ISP using my skills as Signal Support from the military since I cant find work here. Respectfully, Eric |

Have you tried a service such as ours, or Orion, Lucas, BMI, etc?...or the single-stop shops in each state that are tied to the VA?

Eric,
First I would like to thank you for your service. I'm sorry you are having such a difficult time with your job search. Unfortunately, many people experience the same difficulty that you are dealing with in terms of employers not understanding what is involved in hiring someone who is in the military. You just need to have the opportunity to explain to a potential employer how your military background will impact your ability to perform on the job. You need to be as prepared as possible for these interviews so that you can anticipate difficult questions and combat them up front. I would recommend that you consider meeting with a career transition coach who can assist you. At X, we only work with current or prior military during their career transitions and a lot of our team is former military. We provide resume and career transition services that specialize in translating your skills to the civilian sector. If we can be of any assistance please feel free to contact us online at Mod Edit: (LINK: Commercial Solicitation by Author Removed) Keep your head up, there are many employers who want people with your background, sometimes they just don't know it yet! As a Military member who is proudly serving over 20 yrs now(Ft Hood), I can relate. I plan on working in the Austin Texas area but the city is extremely anti-Military / anti-Bush. It seems its on the same level as Berkley Ca. It has me a little worried.

both of my boys joined the National Guard and are on the college first program. (I was surprised, their dad just retired Navy) Neither one of them have been able to secure a job that is permenant. Apparently the powers that be think they will be deploying I guess. They both have had a hard time of it and one of them has at one point been evicted and is working a temp job at walmart. The other one has just recently had a new baby and they both are really struggling. This is rough for them and we try to help out when we can because everyone is having a hard time with the high cost of gas and all. I'm not sure about the anti-war sentiment but it has crossed my mind. This is a small town that has a lot of liberal minded people and we relocated here from Florida. We don't have any friends, family or acquaintances here to help out on that end. At this point they have expressed the fact that they have thought about going active army just to feed the family. They really wanted to go to school first though.
