In 1970, my husband went into the Army a month before his 18th birthday, so he never was given a Draft number.
He went to Viet Nam as a tanker from July 1970 to July 1971. In July 1975 he got out of the Army and we spent until April 1983 from odd job to odd job. He tried going to college, but 2 weeks before the semester ended, he got a full time job and had to make the decision to leave college or take care of his wife and three daughters. So then he spent years repaying the VA for that semester of school.
There were no programs to help him with his transition to civilian life, he left the Army with wife and three daughters and had to do it all on his own.
There was supposed to be Veteran's only hiring, like USPS, which he applied, lost the job to a Black that wasn't a Veteran.
Finally in 1981 an Army Recruiter friend told my husband, he'd get him back in the Army or find him a job.
The Army refused his re-enlistment, said he had too many dependents, which he had these dependents when he got out in July 1975. So the recruiter found him a job in Security at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Washington, we had to move to Washington from our home in California.
He's been at this job since April 1983.
Sure wish my husband had had help when he first became a Vet.

I agree, having a multitude of resources available so quickly is something special! Even in just the last 5-8 years the type & depth of veterans information on the I-net has changed substantially.
I wish previous generations of vets would have had the tools my generation has been able to rely upon.
BZ to your DH for overcoming his employment obstacles!
