I heard a rumor and maybe someone can confirm or deny it. So when a member becomes an "ME" is he/she issued a gun and a badge that they can carry around in public?
I heard it from some people at my unit! When asked why they where switching rates they said "you get a gun and a badge" so I just wanted to confirm it.
All I can say is WOW! Even if that were true its a horrible reason to switch rates. Someone may want to get with those folks and give them some facts and insight to what the ME rating will really be doing, quickly, before they're terribly disappointed. It amazes me where people get these crazy ideas.
The only CG personnel that I'm aware of that are personally issued a badge and a PDW (gun) are CGIS Agents. The CG created a new rate, not new jobs where members "get to carry a gun". Hopefully, this new rate will help develop the maturity for some of those conducting LE missions.

What's not going to happen: "Here's your new badge and gun, ME. Now go forth and do good things..."
What's most probably going to happen (from what I hear): Here's your new pubs, ME. Now go forth and teach good things..."
The only time CGIS "carries around in public" is during warrants, raids, etc. Overtly.
The rest of the time (which is about 98% of the time), both the badge & gun are concealed. Covertly.
BTW, anyone AD should read ALGENL 140/09 regarding laterals & deadlines...
If we ever carried a gun and a badge off duty we would need credentials which means polygraph to get them. mind you how many lawenforcement officals are under the age of 21 as well.
If people actually applied because they think they are getting a gun and a badge, that shows that they obviously don't know much about USCG LE and have zero experience, and I am willing to bet they are NOT selected for the ME rate. If they are God help us!

Where I do agree with you that ME's will most likely never be issued a gun and a badge, I believe you need to brush up on your law and law enforcement policies. A polygraph is NOT necessary in almost 50% of law enforcement agencies to be hired. Polygraph's being issued depends on the individual departments requirements. CGIS agents DO NOT take polygraphs to receive their weapons and credentials. There is an extensive program but that is not a requirement.
