What is the difference between the Coast Guards search and rescue and the Navy's Search and Rescue. What is the deployment like and what are their programs like.
The Navy doesnt do Search and Rescue, they assist the CG in SAR Cases if need be. Navy SAR is based around picking up navy/marine corp pilots that have to bail out of their aircraft. The Coast Guard is the lead agency when it comes to Maritime Search and Rescue. Not sure what details you were looking for, it was kinda vague question.
Oh ok. well the reason i was wondering is because i am about to join the coast guard and eventually become an AST. But i've also talked to the Navy and they said they did the same thing so i just wasn't real sure what the difference was between the two. I didn't know that the navy only assisted the CG. But thanks for the info.
macon, Thye Navy SAR swimmers focus on assisting downed aviators, but do assist other agencies in their SAR efforts. I like the CG best, but suggest you consider which service will guarantee your training and when you will get it. Our aviation ratings are top heavy, make sure you have a good idea of how high you can advance and how fast.
I read last night on the Web about a Navy H-60 squadron in Guam that has the primary SAR duty for DOD and CG operations there. It also looks like that AFB there will be getting busier in the futures as things heat up more in Asia.

Semantics issues there. One of the primary resources the COAST GUARD uses, in their role as the SAR Coordinator in that area is in fact the USN Helo's. Coast Guard case, using USN assets. To be simple, in that case, the Navy is in the same ballpark as Baywatch boats are in LA and HI.
