UK SAR Management Degree???
Does anyone know of a university that offers a online Search and Rescue Management Degree? I am retired from the USCG and live in the United Kingdom where I work for what is essentially their version of the USCG with regard to SAR, called the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). I have a team of Lifeboat Trainers and am interested in enrolling them in a formal SAR degree program. I was speaking with a RN officer who stated that he thought a program like that was offered by a university in the States but he could not remember where. Would be keen for any leads on this program or ideas for universities that let you “build” SAR degree programs. Thanks JoJo |

Most likely it will be an Emergency Management degree, with some ncourse in SAR. I've never heard of a SAR degree. Tell your organization to send them to SAR school in Yorktown. It will faster and more than likely cost the same when all said and done. Here's a school that offers some courses.

Chief JO
Sorry for the thread hijack, but I send greetings of the season to you and your wife from my family. My son David worked with your wife in the HR office and speaks very highly and fondly of their time working together. He asks that I send to you and your wife his fondest regards, and compliments of the season to you both. I tried sending you a PM, but apparently the email system is not working, If it ever did. I am currently a lifeboat coxswain in the USCG and have also spent time in the RNLI. I saw your post and was curious as to the opposite. I was wondering what kind of job opportuniies there are in the lifeboat college in Dorset for an ex coastie. I know there is a USCG billet there for a year that I will be trying for but I was hoping that my prior involvment in the RNLI would give me an inside track? Any input would be appreciated. I can be reached also at my private email of ckatelnikoff@hotmail.com
Many thanks. |

Hi Cameron,
If you are interested then check out www.rnli.org.uk then select “Jobs” on the right hand side. That should lead you to whatever is being advertised at the RNLI. It is a great organization with a lot of dedicated people (the vast majority of those people are unpaid volunteers). Read the person specification and job description for the position you are interested in and if you think you fit the bill you can usually apply on line. I assume you have a life ring and crossed ors (from your time at Cape D) but the qualifications here (if you are looking at underway instructor/ trainer positions) usually require RYA qualifications like Advanced Instructor, Yachtmaster ect. Check out the Royal Yachting Association at www.rya.org.uk for where, when, and how to get those qualifications. Some of them are available at licensed training centers in the US. Most of the applicants I have seen come from the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Merchant officers, folks who have other positions within the RNLI ect. You would need at least Advanced Instructor to be even remotely competitive. More like Powerboat Trainer or Yachtmaster Examiner to ensure you make it through to get an invitation to an assessment center. A teaching degree, or teaching/ assessing NVQ is a great thing to have also. You would need to legally be able to work in the UK before you apply. Okay disclaimer time, I don’t work in HR and I am providing this advice based on what I understand to be correct, so please don’t take legal action if I’m wrong. Good Luck JoJo Post Script Hi Jack, Sent you a note and passed on your greetings. Post Post Script All that having been said still looking for that SAR degree program for my trainers. Or recommendations of universities that are open to creating/ constructing specialized degrees (i.e. SAR) that the trainers could do part time (distance ed). I’m trolling through the various disaster management programs but have not found one that is in anyway maritime related. Anyone out there have any ideas? Thanks JoJo |

Just to close the loop on this:
I did not find the degree program I was looking for but have found a University willing to create it. If anyone out there is interested in a Masters Degree in Maritime Search and Rescue Management, delivered through distance education, drop me a line at jojo_mains@rnli.org.uk and I’ll let you know if and when the University will be taking applications. It looks like their program will be academically vetted and ready by September 2010. Bare in mind this is a University in the United Kingdom. Regards, JoJo |
