All I can say is don't worry. This happens sometimes. If they are on a sensative misson, or one piece of the system breaks and they are waiting on a part or something. If something bad happened, everyone would know about it... so it is with confidence that I tell you everything is okay, communications will probably be back soon.

Cheryl, I'm sorry if I came off as rude, just wanted you to be aware of operational security issues. Sorry to hear your daughter is ill, but speaking as a former shipboard corpsman, I can tell you that the medical personnel aboard are well trained, and will take good care of your daughter. Please pass along my thanks to her for serving in the finest seagoing service on earth! -Jeff

PS: per your concerns voiced in PM I pulled this off the inter-web, not sure how up to date it is, but you might try here. -Jeff

Just to give the OP something to be calm about, in today's age, a person can be in a kayak 500 miles at sea and simply use a handheld satellite phone to order chinese food. It's getting it delivered that might be the issue. Big Grin

Yeah. those SAT phones are cool. We just got this at work for "disaster" use. We tested it when we got it and it works no different then any other phone. Seen where you can rent one for 35 bucks a week @ 2.49 a minute for use. Or you can buy "buckets" of minutes.

If you have a loved one on a cutter that is currently underway communications can be sketchy depending on where they are at. We don't have enough satellites around the world to cover the entire globe. With that said if there is seriously ill spouse or child and you would like the member to be notified the best course of action is to contact the Ombudsman or contact your local Red Cross. If you are requesting the member be brought back home to care for his family because of a serious illness the Red Cross has to be notified as per the Comdt because there are procedures that need to be followed so the ship can properly authorize the member to leave.

There are those occasions though when a member cannot leave. That usually results from short manning, no one take his/her place and so forth. I wish you and your family nothing but good health but those procedures above are required for notification.
