I just seen the video. It seems this 73 year old man owes his life to the keen eyed watchstander in the tower. Great job!!

As I understand it, it was a newer guy to the CG. His name was familiar and I had to ask if his dad was an AMT1.

As a person who has stood that very watch, bravo zulu to the watchstander. That tower can be the most boring watch in the world. But I think it is worth it.Diligent watchstanders saves lives every year.

Glad to the tower watch get some recognition.

I've been to that tower many times myself. Beautiful place to watch the sunset.

Isn't it the job of someone standing a look out watch to......look out? Roll Eyes

I've pulled many a look out watch, so I understand it can get boring. So what? It's part of the job!

If he HADN'T spotted the person should he have been booked for dereliction of duty?

No wonder so many look like Admirals in the Brazilian Navy.....Some folks seem to feel awards need to be given to people for doing what they are supposed to do.....

Seems like a "good Job" from the C.O. would be adequate.

I've got to agree with the award, that is a great job.
Having surfed and fished all around both jetties there, that watch takes a very keen eye. There are all sorts of seals, sea lions, birds, and occasional shark, not to mention sea state to distract the solo watchstander's attention.

Yet his job is to NOT become distracted.....should awards be given to coxswains that do not become distracted and therefore do not run their boats aground?

come on Guns that kid could have been doing a million things wrong, but if we are going to take the time to get motivated for the ones that mess up shouldn't we take the time to professionally recognize the ones doing it right.

on top of that, no they should not
"get distracted". Nor should they be taken for granted. It is not our role in this to diminish what this watchstander did. it is our role to say BZ. you and I don't get to decide if it was "above and beyond".

Hey dave,

My brother, Hal Robbins, is in town and told me to say hi to you and your dad.

He also said to ask your Dad if he still has some of the Charleston venison in his freezer....

Stan, he knows damn well the last time I saw it it was in the custody of one very grumpy, Oregon State Game Warden. That was many years ago. It's kind of funny, you can run boats for 28 yrs and no one remembers you were a boat driver. Shoot one little old deer out of season, and look what happens. Tell Hal hello for me and thanks for the chuckle. Dave
