Workers from Southwestern Crane & Rigging on Wednesday lower a Nike Ajax air defense missile onto its base in front of the Fort Bliss Museum. Eight missile artifacts from the museum are being removed and moved to Fort Sill, Okla., the new headquarters for the U.S. Army Air Defense Artillery School. In addition, artifacts from the 1st Armored Division's "Old Ironsides" collection are being relocated to Fort Bliss from Germany, said Peter Poessiger, the museum's director. The artifacts include 35 tanks and 10 armored vehicles. Removal of the missiles is scheduled to be completed by Friday. The museum will become the Fort Bliss Old Ironsides Museum.
I have to tell you, For the past 3 years, living in Mexico and visiting El Paso at least once a month, I never left Bliss feeling good about what I saw...
Yea lots of nice facilities but it just was not what I called home off and on for over 20 years. I suppose things have to move on but this sucks. And no, I probably will never visit Ft Sill, it was never and will never be home.
