one of the best , if nt the best army training asignments there is/was !! Anyone else remember their time in the allied student battalion ? as a 24 m it was like going to college right out of ait , 16r . I remember the german hawkers, and their own break room with a beer tap, the night schedules due to the radar illumination schedules , the all graders club, and the feeling that with all this training the army was giving me that i had made a good choice as far as mos's went. I know the patriot and hawker guys had longer schools , most of them left with their spec 4's . Does anyone know if that is still around?
Ah yes, I remember ALL of that very well. Indeed was one of the best assignments in the Army. It will never be the same again once it is all moved to Fort Sill. Sigh!

I have a very vivid memory of the German Air Force Boeing 707 that arrives once a week on Tuesday from Frankfurt. The 707 has a special configuration of half passengers and half cargo. The passenger part was for the Germany students and their families to travel to / from Germany. The cargo part was always crammed full of the German necessities of life, Germany beer, sausages, etc. The German students were always in a good mood on Tuesdays.
I spent a lot of time there, as a student and as an interpreter. It was the nicest time. I remember all those allied country dinners at the mess hall. We had also a lot of beercalls in the basement of building 1002 (next to the mail room).
Some of you may recall this, at the Fort Bliss Officers Club they had German Day once a week, I think it was on Tuesday’s. They served German food and beer and it was a very popular day to visit the “O” Club especially when they decided to allow the German women to go “topless” at the swimming pool, but only on this special German Day.
The swimming pool was right next to the street and on Tuesday’s the traffic become very heavy with gawkers. Soon they placed metal slats in the hurricane fence and planted a lot of oleander bushes to make a hedge to allow some forms of privatesy. This was the talk of Fort Bliss back in the day.
Well, El Paso, in their infinite wisdom, did not fight to keep ADA at Fort Bliss, thinking that they would have a windfall with the massive numbers of Amour units moving in. Now, I read where they are having second thoughts about not keeping ADA. For one thing the ELP Police reports concerning military personnel have risen almost 3/2 and climbing. It appears that the Amour folks are much more rambunctious (on and off post) than the ADA folks were. There was a big article in the El Paso Times concerning this very subject a short time ago and if I can locate it I will post it.
So in effect, El Paso deserves what they get due to the lack of inaction on keeping ADA. The problem is I still do not believe this was the best move for the Army to make and that is the bottom line. This was all part of Sec. Def. Rummy’s realignment of the military disaster.
One weekend when I was on O.D. duty, some of the HAWK AIT students, this just happened to be a class of 24 U.S. Marines, had ventured down into 3DACR territory to their beer garden at the unit’s little P.X. Well, of course it wasn’t long until a fight broke out and it appeared that every 3DARC soldier had ganged up on the 24 Marines. Soon all you could hear all over the Post was sirens and every M.P. on Fort Bliss responded to the ruckus. Nobody really won and the beer garden was closed for several days’ for repairs and the paperwork took almost a week.
And I beleave that the 3DACR had alot of field time, they 89% of the time would have Fred wilson Blvd close off and on so tanks could cross to get in to the filed.. They spent alot of time in the field.. and alot of the wifes hit the club and Dyer Street.
Yeah I remember being warned about crossing those tracks
