Air Defense: Fort Bliss celebrates anniversary

El Paso Times Staff
06/23/2008 12:00:00 AM MDT

Congratulations to Fort Bliss on the 40th anniversary of its air-defense mission. Mo dern Fort Bliss is a model of how the Army changes to meet national security needs. Fort Bliss is in the vanguard of an Army in transformation, and is helping in the change through such initiatives as the Future Combat Systems program that better enables warriors to fight today's and tomorrow's battles wherever they might occur.

So it was with air defense, which started off in 1907 as the Coast Artillery and changed to keep pace with changing needs, finally ending up as U.S. Army Air Defense Artillery and finding a home at Fort Bliss.

Fort Bliss has been an integral part of the technological advances that have propelled this branch from the artillery permanently emplaced along U.S. coastlines to the highly mobile and incredibly lethal weapons of today that include the Theater High Altitude Area Defense system, a missile that uses "bullet on bullet" technology to kill enemy ballistic missiles.

And, through the years, El Paso and Fort Bliss have become inseparable, particularly in an economic sense. We're grateful to have them as part of this community.

Fort Bliss also holds high importance for the nation in its national defense role. As Fort Bliss Command Sgt. Maj. Robert Rodgers said last week, "We have nothing to fear but complacency. And we will not allow ourselves to become complacent."

Again, happy anniversary to Fort Bliss and the Air Defense Artillery.

The ADA school has helped the El Paso community during the thin times, now that the 1st Armored Division is moving, ADA is getting kicked to the curb. Not that its El Paso's fault, ADA's downfall in the Army for the large part is it's own fault.

It really started when the SGT York program fell apart due to attempted fudging of live fire testing. The Linebacker has worked in the interim, and I don't know of a viable system that will eventually replace it. A SHORAD mix of guns and missles is most effective.

I hope to see ADA survive and have a long history as it's own branch, but with it's move to Fort Sill its hard to say.

Yes, the goblet was included. The DVD was nice but could have been longer and included some videos of live fire as I am sure there is a lot of that to have picked from. Perhaps it should have also included some words from the CG on this occasion. But overall it was a nice gesture to offer something to mark the anniversary.
