We had a indoor electronic Stinger Range at 2AD FWD in Garlstedt, Germany. Even though I was 11H they let us go practice on it. That was a neat experience.
That little probe that would touch your temple that would tick was cool (not sure what it was called). So was the range. It was a quarter sphere inside with a sky projection.
Do they still have Stinger units on Active Duty today?

The facility your talking about is called the Moving Target Simulator. I have spent many hours in there, tracking targets and training gunners. I got the chance to use the "super dome" before I got off active duty, it gave you a 360 degree field of vision to look for targets and also upgraded the graphics for the aircraft and explosions.
Also the vibrating thing your talking about is called the cheek to bone transducer. Once you had a positive IR lock on your target, the transducer would go from a mild buzz to off the scale. Its purpose obviously is made for combat situation where you wouldn't be able to hear the tiny speaker which also gives you the cue if you have a positive IR lock.
I spent two tours in the FRG. The first one was in C Btry 2/59 ADA in Schwabach back in 1982-83 and the second tour was in D Brty 1/59 ADA in Wackernheim between 1985-1988. Red Lions! Defendimus!

That was it, thanks! We only trained with the Stinger once or twice indoors it was a Infantry familiarization thing. That was a neat range though. They had another one at 2AD (FWD) like it for "Call For Fire" practice. Same deal with projections on the screen. I got chewed out on that one for requesting a nuclear round (at first).
I was 19 and only wanted to see the presentation on the screen.....and lo and behold after the NCOIC complained about me not taking the training seriously (I had to explain I was new to the range and only wanted to see the presentation for that request)..... they actually had a projection for it and played it, now that was cool!!!

How far were you from B battery 6/56?
I was on Spangdahlem AFB across from the bowling alley,6/56 HHB was a few buildings away, then my platoon was moved onto somewhere outside Bitburg for commo reasons .(they called it the rock, sure was a lot of rocks!)I didnt know much about Hawk, since I was signalbut we provided there commo and some other stuff. One memorable moment was when we were banned from the AF clubs on the base, thanks to our COmmander!
Sorry about you guys being band from the AF Clubs.. they were no that bad.
What cause your Co to band you guys from the Club?
COme one Monday morning the word was out that our CDR had a knock/down drag out fight with an AF officer that weekend. They were always harrassing us anyway, especially the AF Mp's at the front gate every morning. Did you get to see Pres Reagan when he was in Bitburg? I know HHB 6/56 provided an entourage of buses for all these dignataries who were at the cemetery with Pres Reagan, I didn't get to go of course. What is C/V, ADA talk?? Vulcan?
C/V= Chaparral/Vulcan, all 6/56 were composit batters each assigned to defens each base along with HAWK Back-up.
While RR was in town I was getting ready for Energency leave, As I was in roue back to Bitburg/BRC HQ; I saw a plane take off and out of nowhere there were gunships flying cover .
