On another mesage board they have a this date in history thread. Someone posted on August 7, 1942 - The first U.S. amphibious landing of the Pacific War occurs as 1st Marine Division invades Tulagi and Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. Looking thru some of my dads stuff I came across these & thought it would be good to share.

I may be way out in left field playing with a catcher's mitt, but in reading the commendation I believe that the First Special Battalion was a predecesor to the Cargo Handling Battalions of the 50's which were Service Force activities.
Regardless, a great piece of naval history. |
