I just enlisted as a BU, shipping (unfortunately) in April. My question, as the classifier didn't seem to certain, is does that automatically mean I am getting Seabees combat training after A school? Is the BU rating only a Seabee rating?

you normaly do not go through Seabee Combat training till you get to Battalion, Yes BU is a Seabee Rating only, But as a BU you could be Stationed anywhere.

as a BU you will attend a school in gulfport, MS. towards the end of a school you will recieve your orders. if you are sent to a battalion stationed in gulfport (1, 133, 7, 74, or 11) then you will attend SERT (seabee replacement training) which is a two week course consisting of a week of book study and another week at the firing range. upon completion of SERT you will check into your battalion. i am not sure what the course of action is if you are sent to a battalion somewhere other than gulfport.

First you will need to get to the battalion. After you've gotten comfortable request being assigned to the CSE. That would be where you are more likely to get more weapons and combat training in the battalions. If you are so interested in the combat side, why didn't you join the Corps?

For numerous reasons. I wanted to get my student loans paid off (USMC doesn't have a loan repayment program), I like to build and work outside so the BU rating seemed like a good fit, and my wife wouldn't be too excited about me becoming an infantryman, so I was looking to satisfy us both.

Is there really much difference in what NMCBs and ACBs do on a normal basis?

YES, ACBs work at the beaches and ports and NMCB work inland, although they have been known to work within the port setting...

Individual augmentee
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
An Individual Augmentee is a United States military member assigned to a unit for the purpose of filling in for, or augmenting, members of that unit. Individual Augmentees or IAs are differentiated from existing members of that unit by the fact that they are assigned individually rather than as part of a traditional military organization (such as a brigade, battalion or company). Individual Augmentees can be used to fill shortages or can be used when an individual with specialized knowledge or skill sets is required. As a result, Individual Augmentees can include members from an entirely different branch of service. The system has been used extensively in the current Iraq War, though with some criticism. Currently, there are approximately 12,000[1] Navy and Air Force personnel filling Army jobs in the United States, Iraq, Afghanistan, Cuba and the Horn of Africa at any one time.
