Funny on the two boats I was on they called the 3 man rooms for the O gangers staterooms too. Plus there was a trick question: All Submarines sink. Just 2 of them have not resurfaced yet. Dang NUBS. At least I qualified as Skipper too. Razz

The way some of 'em keep running into things, a large supply might be in order. Eek

I'll tell you one thing - some of the 'answers' have changed since smokeboat days. The length of the day, for one. We used to have 4-hour watches. The number of staterooms, for another.

Anyway, glad to have you aboard...you can join the rest of the knuckleheads in my stateroom for an advanced question session. Beer

Awright - you and your cohort in crime, NWIP, can just pipe down for a minute...look, we're gonna do it smokeboat-style - splice the mainbrace with the 'medicinal' supplies. Now, this requires two signoffs in the issue log: the ABC Officer and the XO.

Since NWIP has announced she's qualified as XO, that's what she'll be. That leaves Mike as the ABC Officer and Issuer. That should work. We'll get Neal to go up to the Squadron on his 'Wing' to replenish supplies.

This is a great idea. What kind of graemlin can we use for the 'toasting thingy'? I just couldn't find one that represented 'our boat' properly. I mean, if we want beer, several of y'all make homebrew - so we can use the pump room for a production area...and it is conveniently located right below the Christmas tree. Big Grin

OK, class, now the first 'qualification question' for our little group is:

"The Ekelund Range gets its name from:
a. The line of bouys marking the harbor entrance to Petropavlovsk
b. The torpedo firing range just east of the Tongue of the Ocean
c. A four section spread just north of Eagle Pass
d. Joe Ekelund.

If your answers are correct, I'll sign your qual card and you may proceed to the pump room for libation. More questions to come...OH! - submit your answers on this thread - no fair using the internet to look stuff up. Whisper

As I was honored the other day with the presentation of a chief's coin and sub official cap, can I by-pass the test? At my age, studying for a test, and passing it, can be a problem.

PS: Took exam. It's flawed. Cans NOT stored on FA passageways on sub I visited the other day, although were at one time. Bonafide answer I missed first time was state where nuclear fuel sent.

So, missed two questions, still made captain. Suggest none of you ever serve on my crew!

I'll bite on this one, Mac.

Question One

Joe Eklund- He's the one that came up with the process for the calculation, so we name it after him, just like with the Coffey Plot.

Question Two

I'm going to guess Deep throat doesn't belong. Spread three is an old smoke boater term, Down the Throat is one too, which leaves only bear trap and deep throat. I'm gonna say deep throat is too modern a term to apply here.

My Question:

What process causes a fathometer allows "secure" fathometers to function with minimum detection risk?

Bonus Question:

Does it, did it work? Why or why not?

And don't get into OPSEC stuff to find the answer, either.

Hmmmm. This isn't going to work, is it? I'm going to have to put them up all at once in another place, like the other quiz. Dang. I thought this would be easier than it is. Y'all can look at each other's papers...Not that there are all right answers, necessarily...That's OK, I still need answers from NWIP and MikeW...they won't peek. Whisper

#1 I believe is d named after Joe Ekelund.

#2 I think is b, Deep Throat was the name of the informant during Watergate.

Ding, ding, yes, ma'am. I knew Joe pretty well - he was XO Growler, another Regulus boat, when I was in that 'business'. He made 2 stars, actually. Great tactician.

As for the other answer - ...and it was also the name of a 'naughty' movie...well before the association with Watergate. Eek

I'm working on some other Q's that might be fun. I know the answer to stumpx's Q since I was the program officer for u/w acoustics that developed that device. I don't know how to talk about it in a public forum. Whisper

Thanks, again, you are officially qualified as our XO - proceed to the pump room for your 'reward'. Clapping

Wohooo it's party time Big Grin

Hey I meant to tell you guys earlier as well, if you ever go to the Submarine Museum in Poulsbo, WA ask if they have the USS Nautilus book available to look at. Years ago when we were in Hawaii and went to the yearly book sale put on by the Library I bought it. It included a newspaper clipping in the front of it which was very interesting. It needed some repairs on the binding and I felt it was best at the library. So hopefully you will get a chance to check it out.
