Well I made a mistake and actully watched the NBC evening news... Mad Damn they spun me up again.
Now the State of California thinks they can tell the navy how to do its job. 12 mile limit on active sonar. OMG!! Just tell the bad guys to "attack here". When a sub sinks a tanker off cali's coast they are going scream "Wheres the Flippin Navy we been paying for." This oil slick will kill the longnosed hyperfinned dogsnot fish!!! I just can't belive the crazy @ss treehugging libs.
OK rant over, new shot of scotch poured.
I think I am better now.

This has turned into a major kerfuffle between Navy, State of CA, and now various 'public interest groups'. The Navy is responding creating all kinds of reports showing that while pinging may have caused the death of 5 (count 'em, 5) sea mammals, the Japanese and Korean fishing industries killed over 300,000 in the same period last year.

Haven't seen a response to that, yet. However, I'll bet the facts make very little difference to those who are complaining. Their intent, as with all Nader-based groups, is to inflict harm on the United States of America.

Ahhh all in the name of protecting the whales and the fish. When I was out in San Deigo in the late 80's they were all for protecting the gray whale. Yet you would see a bunch of tour boats within a few yards of the whales. I have no doubt the came close to hitting a few with their props. UGH

I don't think Marine life is harmed by pinging, much.

If they were, then how come you don't see millions of blasted fish and dolphins every year washing up on shore?

Stupid libs.

Did anyone read about the "dolphin murders" lately?

Seems flipper has some homicidal tendencies, and may be to blame for all these porpoises washing up dead on our beaches, and not active sonar at all.

I apologize. Having visited Northern California, and having met several of it's people....I love that place. I did not mean to paint all of the state with that brush...

Hummm didn't they outlaw port visits of submarines up there? Something about supporting the war mongers. I seem to remember something like that happening up in Oregon. Razz

There hasn't been a port visit by a nuc boat in Oregon for a long long long time, unless you count Astoria, which I don't.

Astoria will welcome anyone with money. Nope, the folks that are hard core military haters are the Olympians in Washington. I just love them peace niks. Being the man that I am, I just patronize them and wink at their girlfriends, and flirt shamelessly. Why not? They are complete wusses! WTF are they gonna do? They already proved to me that they are cowards without the backbone of a real man, so why not rub it in?

I believe this decision was by a federal court located in the state of CA.
Don't confuse this decision as it was not by a CA. state court, and they
both have different laws.

I came across this years ago and notice the ping C code is no longer available.
< Link ping programmer >

The unavailability may be due to (A08-T005 TITLE: Trustworthy Execution of Security-Sensitive Code on Un-trusted Systems).< Link Army Topic >

The biggest issue with active sonar and marine mammals takes place in the deep sound channel, and not shallow water.

High powered active does get trapped in layers, and to a mammal travelling deep it can sound like an approaching frieght train. The animal rises quickly to get out of the layer, and develops the bends, just like a human. Autopsies have shown but excessive levels of nitrogen and air embolysims.

There is some discussion about the constant high background level interfering with echo location and navigation. I think it's valid, but not the whole story.

A boat having to operate without the option to use all of its' systems, disgusting. We don't use active much on the east coast, don't know about west coast, but the damage potential to sea mammals is a hell of alot less than the danger they face from the Japanese fishing industry...
