If you forget about the BS of an overhaul and look at whats available in the general area around Portsmouth, NH your all set.
You have Boston (females) not to far away, some great nightlife in Portsmouth for the younger group (girls), IE: UNH not to far away if you want to attend classes (and possibly meet some females (college girls)) and Portland, Me just north of you (down Maine girls). Theres more than enough to keep you occupied. Oh yea, don't forget you've got that Navy stuff to do during the day. USS Liberty, Never Forget. I believe in Murrays Law, he thought Murphy was an optimist. |

Stay away from Vermont. Its almost impossible to tell the men from the women in some towns and if you look crosseyed they tax you on it.

Of course, my point that proximity to all those things means you will never have the time to enjoy them still applies.
To me, having that "just a little out of reach due to JICT" is maddening. I'd rather drag my privates through broken glass at the bottom of the bilge than spend a second in dry dock ever again. It is all the agony of childbirth, and all the child support, without the joy of the child. |

the worst thing for a new submariner is to start off in the drydock....I only say this from experience, I left groton with orders to bremerton, wa onlt to find out that my boat wasn't there yet. I had to beg and plead to get to Hawaii where the boat was enjoying stand down. Then after three months in Hawaii, I was cursed with my second time out to sea going to bremerton again, all I can say is learn as much as you can before they start taking things off the boat and you are forced to learn everything by someone saying "What used to be there or What goes here? Try and ride another boat if possible to get your fish...

Dh's sub was in refit for 18 months of pure H&LL. working 6 to 7 days a week, over 13 hours a day. Christmas stand down was Christmas Day, New Years Eve, New Years, of which they had duty at least 1 day (dh had it both Christmas Eve & NY Eve). We had no Ombudsman, no FSG, the wives almost demanded Family Separation because we never saw them. We all said that it was better to have 2 back to back WestPacs than to go through that again!
But on a positive note, he got off before they got finished with it and had a heck of a time with trials. They were even more of a nightmare because one crew kept messing up. To give you an idea some of the guys didn't understand why when they were a combined crew they were called the "Green" crew. Gee what color does blue make when it is mixed with gold??? |

That sounds like my boat I was actually in teh navy 4 years before going out to sea. We were so green we scrammed the reactor twice in a week. |

I started out in Portsmouth, the Kam was there for overhaul when I was a boot. Ended my career there when we decommed 696.
The area is great, I still travel to downeast Maine every year for visits and tourist stuff. It's tough to qualify when most of the ship's systems are ripped out. Make sure your COB and Chief know you want to go to sea. Groton boats always need some extra hands. No guarantees though, the boat still needs watchstanders and people to clean. |
