I got to work with a couple of guys after their NR1 tour. they both said they enjoyed their time on board, and wouldn't go back....EVER! Having never felt that way about any job, I grew very, very leery of NR1....

Correction- as non-nuke you CAN get the deep submergence silver pin on NR1, just not the gold pin....
PO1-Adam has the same thoughts on her, although, if something were to happen to her he would be crushed. We've discussed this at length.... It's hard work, more so than anywhere else, but HIGHLY rewarding (from what ADAM says). I can tell he misses it immensely at times, especially when watching the discovery channel and he can look at our kids and say "I've seen that!" This message has been edited. teh you can also get the deep submergence pin if you work with the DSV/DSRV program. I had a buddy that went over to that group. But again that is a very small group so good luck there.

I wonder how many of us we could cram in there...if we get 10 of us it's only $10,000 for a submarine ride. Adam, of course, has to stay home. He's done it before.

Adam says you might be able to get 15 in the ER and maneuvering, but it'd be quite cozy, and depending on who the EOOW was one of them might start punching people
also said he has no problem not going out to sea on her again. |

I remeber. I got to play RADCON on her a couple of times. Compact doesn't describe it. And it gives "submarine shower" a whole new meaning.

Shark: I'm a civilian (see my profile)and might shed some light on your question, some of the responses. (Your profile shows Navy, although no service bio; also shows USS Nautilus. Are you active or retired Navy??) A former journalist, always thought when military/submarine info is "public record" that this would "cut some ice" for responses to some of my operational, historical type questions. Learned early on that "we went out, we came back" is the answer when submariners are asked, "Where did you go, what did you do?" However, all submarine forums' members have been very generous -- and patient -- when I ask questions about the daily lives of submariners. Think in three years I've only gotten my "hands slapped" three or four times. Not a bad record for a civilian seeking information as an "honorary" member of sub forums. Hope this helps. Would have sent above by personal mail but it rarely works on military.com. Nancy Mack: Interesting "Nerwin" name as my late brother, your associate, used middle name, "Merwin" growing up. Name means, "lover of the sea." Think "Harry" means commander. How 'bout that! Sister of Submariner, "Tomahawker" |

One test is worth a thousand expert opinions. |
It certainly does. Our engineer called it "nuclear camping." I had been onboard about a year before I actually rode on her, and that year of work did nothing to prepare me for the culture shock of being underway on that thing. I wouldn't trade the experiance for the world, but I don't think I would fight to get orders back there either. |

I would hope you don't need to...hasn't your career been enhanced enough?
