Hello and let me introduce myself. I am a civilian and an admirer of all those who have served and are serving in the Submarine Force.
I recently finished reading "SCORPION DOWN" by Ed Offley and was wondering what some of you thought of it or what some of you remember about it. I will be happy to reveal what the book says if anyone hasn't read it and is interested. |

We've had several long threads on this Forum about Scorpion and some of the books written about her. Do a 'find' and you'll see.
As for Ed's book - it isn't a favorite with the folks whom I know that are surviving spouses and family members. I declined to be interviewed for the book, as did a number of others. "Mack the Knife" CDR USN (Ret) Illegitimi non carborundum |

"it isn't a favorite"? Why? It doesn't put the crew of the Scorpion in a bad light.
I think the possibility of her being sunk by a Russian sub rather than it's own torpedo (I find that very difficult to believe)seems more plausible. |

That is what I figured. I can't imagine the pain or suffering. However as an American citizen we should have the right to pursue truth.
Usually I'm the first to not believe anything...and like "Red Star Rogue" by Sewell this is a very fascinating possibility to say the least. It also doesn't appear to be over dramatized either. These books are very factual and do not read like a Tom Clancy novel. To be honest with you this account seems the most plausible then anything I've ever seen or read before (Hot Torpedo / Battery Explosion). By the way if I was a surviving family member...I would want the truth. The Cold War is over...for now. Putin scares me! |

I don't want to come off wrong...whenever you bring up a lost sub it isn't pleasant. I understand the government has to think of National Security...but I think in today's global enviroment it would serve the American public to know what our enemies are capable of.
I'm tired of the lefties and terrorist sympathizers making us look like the bad guys. This message has been edited. Last edited by: SHARK7, |

Any time I see a book like this that says it is the Untold Story, I just get a bit uneasy.
The author never served on a sub. And he obviously was never there. I don't see this being listed a a bit of historical fiction or one authors view of what 'might' have happened. When this book shows up at my local Good Will Store, I will buy it |

Take a look at the author's bio, and the list of his other books; then tell me what you think the author's real agenda might be. See if the OP might be cut from the same bolt of cloth. "Mack the Knife" CDR USN (Ret) Illegitimi non carborundum |

Craven comments on book.
The book is fascinating and obviously where there is smoke there is fire...what kind of fire...I'm not sure. In the above article J.P. Craven pretty much says the notion of the Russians sinking the Scorpion is "irresponsible speculation". He also went onto discredit Sewell's book "RED STAR ROGUE". Unless the government declassifies these documents and opens up to the public what really happened to both subs people will always speculate. All I know is that both circumstances are not what the official position's say they are. |

Shark,
Its not a requirement for membership here to fill in your profile but doing so does give a bit of credance to what you post. It helps eliminate questions on motives. Just a suggestion and nothing more. Gerry USS Liberty, Never Forget. I believe in Murrays Law, he thought Murphy was an optimist. |

I will respond to the above post, and then I'm finished with this topic.
I have known John for over 40 years. I was part of his team, along with many others, in the investigation of the loss of Scorpion as well as K-129. What Offley says is irresponsible nonsense. The CO, XO, Eng, and Ops were former shipmates and close friends. The CO was my son's godfather. I had a deep, personal interest in our investigation. I grieve their loss - but the perils of the deep are many. It is a risk we all took and which many take today. I will say nothing more - "70 years or death" is what I agreed to. Actually...I regret posting this topic. I don't want to upset anyone. Mack, I apologize to you directly.
Senseless loss troubles me...the Russian sub Kursk disturbes me the most because I believe that if the Russians acted faster and allowed outside help they could have saved at least one life! So knowing that the Scorpion was in a classified operation before it's sinking and that we knew about it befoe the Submis was issued raises a red flag. As for the K-219...something was definetly going on there because nothing has been declassified. |

Thanks Gerry....
Anyone have any books they could recommend? Best books I've read: Blind Man's Bluff The Silent War (Craven) Crazy Ivan Dark Waters (NR-1) A Cry from the Deep (Kursk) |

I've done some digging on the subject. I have scoured the net for anything I could find and also reread the book Blind Man's Bluff. After digesting all this info I would tend to believe the account in Blind Man's Bluff. Unfortunately it really lays the blame on the Navy for not refitting the sub and ignoring a warning on a torpedo battery. It would seem to be the most plausible account. I could see why the U.S. Navy would want that buried.
As for Offley...maybe the guy is being toyed with or he is a flat out liar. The validity of his story really hinges on a SOSUS tape of a dogfight between Scorpion and a Russian sub. A tape he's never heard but was told about by someone who said that it was pulled out for them to listen too as an exercise. Sounds far fetched to me as well. As for the K-129, I'd love to unravel that mystery. Especially since we won't even show the photos to the Russians. |
