________________________________________________ The thing that I noted most of all was the fact that counting multiple awards, he appears to have in the neighborhood of 30 Medals/Ribbons and a Bunch of little tin badges and pins. And has yet to see an enemy "muzzle flash" or hear a shot fired in anger? Kinda makes one wonder about all those pretty little geegaws. Let me hasten to say its not just him. |

I concur Senior Chief, all part of the fact that it seems all branches of the military feel the need to hand out “self esteem awards” for every little event. Sad thing is, I’ve seem Army Seniors NCOs get a MSM for just putting their time in at a unit and never contributing a damned thing… All part of the service(s) wide “Badge-itis” syndrome… Heck we have E5s in our military today that look like they spent time as a Banana Republic Field Marshal. Just my opinion/ observation, no more no less… |

I always thought the Navy had an award for showing up and doing your job every day, it's called the Good Conduct Medal. I have a definite issue with all these other show up to work and do your job medals. But that is the way of the military today, except maybe the Marines. |

I can remember when I was in ET-A school in 1979 seeing ETC's that had been Atlantic Fleet guys and hadn't been on ships off the coast of Viet Nam that had two medals, Good Conduct and National Defense.

I got out after four year with National Defense and E and Gold C. Thats when we wore the E on the right sleve. Now theres a ribbon for it. Never could figure out what this thing with medal collectors was.
I would have been happy with a good conduct medal but I settled for an honorable after three years, ten months, 28 days, two hours and fifteen minutes (roughly USS Liberty, Never Forget. I believe in Murrays Law, he thought Murphy was an optimist. |

That was basically my era (I was discharged in 1979) and the only medal/ribbon that I was awarded after 1972 was the GCM. Everything else was for operations in Vietnam, China and Korea (the ND was loosely awarded for Vietnam although I thought it was to give me something to put on my uniform in boot camp |

Yes, I remember many of those CPOs and SCPOs that had only those ribbons after almost 20 years of at sea Navy Service... |

During my active duty years 78-82 we didn't even get the ND. They came up with the sea service ribbon, which was like some color to go with your patrol pin.
I remember being kind of miffed when the post office would not give me veteran's preference pretty much because I didn't have the ND. Funny how as an inactive reservist during grenada I was eligebal for the ND, and veteran's preference points. Don't wear my ribbons but thats one I won't buy. I have a dolphins lapel pin I wear sometimes but none of the others mean much to me. Sludge |
