C'mon, Mack...anyone who has served on NR-1 can discuss cramped with any body.

Me, I always thought..."If I Have to go to sea...go BIG!"

Tridents are sweet when it comes to habitability...and getting better when it comes to doing neat stuff while away from port.

If you, say, grew up an ST, with a pop that retired in VA Beach as an ST, and your home town was Norfolk, and you graduated at the top of your A and C school classes so you could have your choice of orders, then wanting that Norfolk billet so bad would actually give you your choice between two boats operating out of Guam.

Bottom line: Pay more attention to your job and what you are doing now than dreaming of where you wish you could be in the great blue Nav.

This was perfect. I'm saving this.

Tell Adam that. Some inspection came on board one patrol and decided that all the extra racks were unauthorized and made the crew get rid of them and hot rack.

Another patrol they had a bunch of midi's come aboard (doing midi ops from the Academy). The midis all got their own racks, and EVERYONE E5 and below got to hot rack, and quite a few E6's did as well. Adam was pissed.......

Granted after hotracking on the NR-1 (4 racks and 12-13 crew members on board) the above doesn't phase him as much any more.

Sounds like he had a piss poor CO. Boomer have been using porta racks since the 60s.

No...Adam had a great CO at that point. If I remember correctly, that was Wes Stevens, and he was a terrfic CO...one of the best I ever had the joy of working for.

Yep. Wes went on to ORSE board afterwards, and Adam ran into him when NR1 pulled into VA once(Not sure if you knew, but WES got in a bit of trouble with squadron just before he left protecting a few of the mechanics).

Next was Merril , who Adam REALLY liked working for. Had a party for the whole crew + families every off crew and made the JOs run the grills. His wife was a sweetie too.

I had heard from John Peterson that several of the mechanics had been nailed for drugs....and then I heard the same from Bob McCombs. I also heard the MLCPO that replaced Chris Carter was less than capable, and there were LOTS of problems the next upkeep.

Bob (who was still the EDMC at the time) jokingly asked me to come back. I would have, but the security issue would have killed it and there is NO WAY I could have afforded the pay cut.... Big Grin

The drug thing isn't why Wes got into trouble (one of the ET's was involved in it too-and is the one who sang). All of the guys involved got tested and passed the piss test, so they all ended up getting in trouble for False official statement, because they all confessed and there was no doubt in anyone's mind they had done it, just not enough evidence to throw them out.

There was actually a hazing incident on the boat-they found out when someone passed out on watch while Adam was EWS U/I. Guy actually asked for it too. Policy is to throw hazers out of the Navy-zero tolerrance-but instead Wes just submerged, masted them all and sent off a message to squadron. Made squadron quite mad.

He would have lost most if his mechanical division if he hadn't done that, qutie a few were really good guys too.

Ah McCombs...sal got him in trouble when he left. Wes told Adam during a CRB that he could qual EWS as an E5, but McCombs refused to send up his card, even though it was done because he wanted some of the lazy first classes to qualify before a second class did. When Sal left, Wes asked him what he thought could be better and Sal (by then a chief) explained what was going on. Within 2 days Adam had a CO-ordered EWS board lined up.

McCombs left about the same time Wes did, I don't remember the name of the guy that relieved him right now, but he rocked too.

The guy that replaced carter was bad, but the guy that replaced the RCLCPO was much worse, actually.

REmember, no dumb questions.

SSGNs deployment schedules similar to SSBNs?

Would SSGNs have MTs due to Tomahawks?

Can SSGN crew, like those on Ohio, receive e-mails?

Thanks.

Are MT's exclusively on Boomers or do any of them do work with any Tomahawks?

SSGN is operating like a really large SSN with the two crew concept of SSBNs.

They do have MTs who do the work that TMs do on Vertical Launch System SSNs. FTs largely take over MCC, though.

SSGNs can get email about as much as SSNs can...depends on mission.

Bah!

Whatever happened to SILENT SERVICE?

Doncha know that's how the Nazi u-boats got counterdetected? Running their traps! Boats should be seen twice a patrol, and never heard.

I think that there were several wives who were quite happy with that arrangement , no news ment no emergency , and hubby couldn't try running things remotely which seemed to fit the good wives just fine . Lack of communication kept some Chiefs married . Wink

Keep your eyes and ears OPEN and your mouth SHUT. Sounds cruel, but it works. I (as a nuke) was also more willing to teach stuff / cut some slack if the guy wanting the checkout paid attention to what I was saying, rather than quote to me from the training material.

As far as getting CAP....that is more an in-rate knowledge thing. Be prepared to work harder than you have ever worked before. As my first Chief told me...."Congratulations on passing your schools....welcome to the fleet. You're a NUB, you're dink, get hot!"

I am proud to say I was a CAP. Especially after missing my last E5 exam by 1.37 points. UGH

As for you getting capped when you show up to your boat it isn't going to happen that quick. I got my CAP after a year and a half. The fact that I crossqualed several different underway watches and did several other things for the command were a big factor.

When a command looks at command advancing someone, they look at the total picture of how good a submariner (as opposed to an FT, or ST, or whatever rate) the person should become. In that regarrd, cross rate quals and watchstanding play a huge part.

I was a nuke, so CAP didn't come often in my part of the boat....you know, STAR babies and all that. I did see an "A" ganger CAPed once, but he was one he77 of a good guy.
