I was stationed there but that was 20 yrs ago so I might not be much help.

Ehh...it's not ALL bad. Weather's pretty nice compared to what I'm used to this time of year (Northern Michigan). Only big complaint: not enough parking lots at the base.

Where in northern Michigan? I spent some time in Houghton....much preferred the lots of snow to the lots of slop Groton had to offer.

Little town 30 minutes northeast of Traverse City called Mancelona. Only about an hour away from Houghton Lake.

Beautiful area. Camped at the south shore of Houghton Lake for about a week one summer....

I lived in Ishpeming, Mi for several years. Loved it up there. The Porcupine Mountian State Park is a great place to camp too.

Waaaaait a dang minute here. You weren't in Northern Michigan. Northern Michigan has always been the Upper Peninsula. Where you are talking about is Southern Michigan.

Hey now...we "Northern Michiganders" don't associate with them dang "Lower Michigan" folks. I mean Detroit, Ann Arbor, Lansing, etc. We are sort of stuck in the middle, so we associated ourselves with the better half of Michigan...da Yoopers! (minus the cool accent).

If you want to get technical, I guess I would say I am from Northern Lower Michigan. Besides, it's not like Lower Michigan ever gives us anything good...like jobs for example.
