Yes. You can rent it. Got a project? Call WHOI or SubLant.

The Navy build a better sub to take it's place? The NR-1 was on the front of a few spy missions in its day.

It still is. Does some oceanographic stuff as well. As Mac said, at 40 years old, it's still fully operational. My husband just got done on a tour there, in fact.

There's talk of decommming her, and they keep pushing the date back because there is nothing to take her place as of yet (and the price tag to repllace her is enormous)

If you need to use her, the going rate is about $100000 a day

Yep, Nerwin is a helluva boat! Only the very best folks were tapped to serve in her.

For extra credit: What diesel boat was used to develop a couple of unique capabilities of Nerwin?

Adam and I guess the dolphin, but she was comissioned only a year before the nr1 was initially launched so we're not sure about that.

Adam wants you to know that his nickname for her is NR-fun.......

Huh, uh, Cat & Adam. It was a far more pedestrian craft: USS Mackeral (SST-1) - one of the T-boats that operated out of Key West.

The T-boats were roughly the same size as Nerwin - so Mackeral was perfect for testing...the landing gear! It was she who first rolled along the ocean bottom - some 200+ times! She also tested the first thrusters, external TV, and manipulator arm. All in the '65-'67 time frame.

Nerwin, by the way, was what my friend Toby Warson used to call her. He was OIC when I was inflicting some of my R&D 'toys' on the Navy.

I enjoyed the book DARK WATERS, about the NR-1.

I thought it was fascinating how a crew of a dozen could do all that they did.

I just got a book called Spy Sub. It's about Halibut and the Jennifer Project. I found some mixed reviews is there a better book on the subject?

I trust my Brothers of the 'Phin will remember that we are "The Silent Service" - and not respond to yet another fishing expedition by this person.

Seriously dude...I asked a question about a better book...

I am not asking for names and details and can you send me a picture from a secret mission. The damn thing took place in 68! Relax already.

They discuss it in Blind Man's Bluff and no one here has a problem recommending that! Mack, I'm not a commie jihadist...I'm an Italian American...Spagehetti and Apple Pie, All AMerican boy!

Of all the people who could be called dude, Mac is the last you should address as such. He holds the unquestioned love and respect of men who followed behind him for the last fifty plus years. Had you the stupidity and the testes to do it in his presence, it would have been an embarassing moment you would remember for the rest of you life. Consider this a slap across your face with a white leather glove.

And if you understood and were qualified, you would know that we keep these details to ourselves, because our brothers are still out there doing it. This ain't the law you are dealing with, but anything we say can and will be used against us, or worse, against our brothers. It's nothing personal against you, but it's very personal to US.

Sorry...I dude a lot.

I understand where you are coming from. I don't know who Mack is but I can tell he is respected. To be honest, I don't belong on these boards. I respect what you guys do and I am fascinated.

I understand there are plenty still out there doing this and please continue to protect this great country. I admitted with "Scorpion Down" that my initial reaction to what I read was wrong. I really started to see it for what it was after I saw the response from you guys.

I only wanted to know if there was a better book on the subject (Jennifer Project)...I'm not a spy and in all honesty there is nothing in any of these books that probably sheds any real light on these subjects.

I just reacted to him calling me out again. I even apologized to him on the other thread in which he gave no acknowledgement. Common courtesy says if a guy apoligizes, you either accept or decline. The guy sees me for what I am, an outsider...someone who has never served and has no right to be on here.

Again, I admire you guys and will continue to be fascinated by the Submarine Force. God Bless you all.

Take care.

You must be young, because you clearly are not getting the message. The submariner community is not like any other community. We don't really do a lot of talking about many of these subjects. Fact is, you probably know all the books out there on what we do better than we do, because a lot of us are trying to forget, not brag, about what we have done. Does that make sense?

Mack is very gently, and politely trying to keep you out of trouble. You might be what and who you say you are. I believe you. If you really want to learn more, I suggest you figure out a way to join up, provided you are mentally, morally, and physically qualified to do so. You do that, you will learn a lot, answer a lot of your questions. But don't expect to learn everything. Even individual boats keep their secrets. You can be moored outboard of another boat for years and still not know where it went, what it did, and when it will come back. Nor would you ask. Sub guys don't brag about that stuff. We do a fair amount of bragging about trim, but that's a double entendre most people wouldn't get. That said, kid, your best bet is to either read up on this stuff, or join, because asking certain questions is going to get you into trouble if you are not careful.

to add to what stumpx said.....

The info out there regarding those missions is all that you will find, and all that is allowed to be published. The fact that it occured a long time ago has no bearing on this reality.

Tadpole look at folks public profiles befoe you stick yer foot further in yer mouth . Don't know why but folks are bending over to backwards to be nice and gently cuff you , while you insist on jumping back in and repeating behavior that you were just told was getting on folks nerves . Being courious and asking questions is fine , learn some old school manners . When folks say we don't discuses that for OPSEC , don't weasel from another direction . Reasons have been given , learn how to approach folks without seeming like an overly coacky kid . Your wanting to know doesn't equat to right or NEED TO KNOW . No one wants to put out what could aid in killing our brothers , or rehashing conspiracy theory that could neg affect our community . If you come back be POLITE , Old School Polite .

Never served on the little one. But working RADCON in Groton, got to work on her.

My goodness. Next to "small" in the dictionary, there should be a picture of that thing.

I used to have a copy of a photo shot in Port Canaveral. The USS Alaska (SSBN 732) nose to nose with NR-1, who was in town to recover shuttle parts. The true meaning of David and Goliath.

The whole crew that rides the boat is entirely comprised of nukes, as are the Temporary crew members that report straight out of prototype and assist only with maintenance and in port watches and rides the support ship while the boat is out (Adam referred to them as slave labor)

There are a few permanent crew member non-nuke jobs on the support ship, though, if you're interested. You don't get the pin, but it does help your career immensly.
