Recommended for civilian reading? Intent is to list top five in each category in my cookbook.

There are so many nonfiction books based on particular submarines. Can you suggest several of these, as well as some others, for NONFICTION category?

Best NonFiction?

Blind Man's Bluff (Drew, Drew, Sontag)
Thunder Below (Admiral F)
Silent Victory: U.S. Sumarine War Against Japan (Clay Blair, Jr.
Big Red -- 3 months aboard Trident Nebraska (Souglas Waller)
Submarine (Clancy)
Silent Steel (Steve Johnson)

It's been suggested in another forum that I drop Big Red.

Any glaring missing ones for below "best fiction"??

Best Fiction? Pick top 5, please.
Das Boot, Lothar-Gunther Buchheim (English, German versions)
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Jules Verne
Hunt for Red October, Tom Clancy
Run Silent, Run Deep, Edward "Ned" Beach
On the Beach, Nevil Shute
Torpedoman, Ron Smith
Blow Negative, Edward Stephens
Ghostboat, George Simpson, Neal Burger
ICE AND STEEL, D. Clayton Meadows
The First Team, John Ball
Pride Runs Deep,R. Cameron Cooke
His Majesty's U-Boat, Douglas Reeman

KEEP IN MIND these are books for civilians with little info about Submarine Force or submariners.

Ms. Bonar,
Good Subject:

My Top three in order of enjoyment (Non-fiction) are:

Unrestricted Warfare, by James F. DeRoe

Clear the Bridge!, By Richard H. O'Kane

War in the Boats (My WWII Submarine Battles),
By Capt. Wm J. Ruhe (Ret.)

I have a sign copy of "Thunder Below", but it just didn't grab me like the other three. "Unrestricted Warfare" is a must read before Clear the Bridge!". And "Unrestricted Warfare" drives me to obtain a copy of "Wake of Wahoo" by Forest Sterling.

Although I should also vote #1 best fiction for "Run Silent, Run Deep, by Edward "Ned" Beach. Reading his book motivated me to put it a "Chit" for subschool, back in 71 while serving in "The Target Fleet"

"May you have Fair Winds and Following Seas"

R.M.R
U.S.S. John Adams (SSBN-620)G
3 Patrols, 72-73

RMR: you've had an interesting career. "Clear the Bridge" was on one of my original lists.

Tough assignment to ask submariners to suggest best books for civilians who have little or no info about Submarine Force or submariners. We want the books to be authentic but, on the other hand, not weighted down with technical detail.

Have a great day, even better tomorrow.

Nancy

Yes, some would say so. My Dolphins and Patrol pins always gave other soldiers pause. But during my "varied" career I ran across several former Submarineers who switched to Army Green also. Actually when I was going to subschool back in 71 a small group of field grade Army Officers came into the Groton Submarine base Navy Exchange. One full Colonel happened to be wearing a set of Silver Dolphins and a War Patrol Pin. Now that is an interesting career!!!

BTW, I have some other titles which I ran across on another website if you want to hear about them. I actually want to get them, since they are out of print, they are pricey too. But a must have for any Submarineer who enjoys the history of WWII submarine combat.

Best Regards,

RMR: Sorry, missed you offer way back.

Yes, would like some of those WWII sub combat book titles if NOT out of print.

Should probably divide book list into

historical
non-fiction
fiction

But makes for lots more work.

Want to include top 10-12 titles in each category in sub cookbook; portion of sales proceeds to go to USSVI Scholarship Fund.

Thanks for any help.

A bit biased, she says....

I enjoyed "The First Team"...thought it was an interesting concept, and he worked it well.

Most sub books and movies, I am too doggone busy picking the thing apart to get into the plot, so I avoid them. The exception..."Hunt for Red October", but only because I was on the 688 that acted the part of the USS Dallas.

I would add another one to your fiction list of Grey Lady Down. I was reading that book and just at the point where the surface ship runs over the submarine when the collision alarm went off on my boat. I almost went straight through the bunk above mine. This was a very good read.

On the nonfiction side, I would certainly recommend "Around the World Submerged" by, who else, Capt. Beach. I read that book when I was about 14 or 15 and 40 years later I still remember it.

My only hiccup with Grey Lady (and I admit I never read the book) was they killed all the nukes in the first 10 minutes.

Give us a chance!
