I've been looking through rating in the Navy and I want to volunteer for submarine duty. I am thinking of either FT, MT or ET for my rating. I was just wondering if anyone could give me some pointers on these ratings. Also, I have read online that the Navy can't guarantee Submarine ratings only that a recruit is in Seaman Submarine Program SS. Is this true?
When I went in 22 years ago you could select what rating you wanted if it was open. Now you go to an advanced electronics training pipeline and then get selected for either ET, ST or FT later on. I was not a boomer rider so I do not know how they are doing things for MT's. I was an ET on attack boats. However these days ET's have been combined with IC, QM and RM under the ET rating.
Also this has been talked about on here so try using the find feature. Good luck in whatever you choose.
Technically, no they can't guarantee you a submarine rating because you may not qualify for submarine duty. There are psychological and physical tests that you have to pass, in addition to all the academic stuff, in order to get onto submarines. SECF will get you into electronics related ratings.
I'm interested in selecting YN/SS as my job after I pass my physical at MEPS. Does the above statement mean that just because I select the YN/SS job rating, that I might not get it and then just get transferred over to a standard YN job?
Only if you don't qualify in some way, such as the extra medical/psychological screening or don't pass sub school. However, except for that, you will go to a submarine.
