Read the FAQ sticky about surfacing and I understand it's either done via propulsion, or filling ballast tanks. I have a question about the latter technique. If the sub uses compressed air to fill ballast wouldn't there be a theoretical limit as to the amount of times the sub could adjust depth before running out of compressed air? Or, does the sub use air created through electrolysis?

Not about to get into depth control or anything near like that on a public forum. This is a case where, even if you have the clearance, you don't have a need to know.

Just suffice to say that we carry enough air to surface.

Well let me apologize for thinking this forum was actually a decent place to exchange knowledge with experienced personnel. I was wrong in giving this forum too much credit for being an vehicle for intellectual exchange. Obviously, it's more like a bridge and harbors ruthless trolls.

I sincerely withdraw my respect from this forum and I'll seek resolutions elsewhere.

No son, Its a forum where information about the operation of submarines and how they do things is not allowed except in publications that are general knowlege.

Understand what you were told. Until that time you can be read only since you want to call the veterans trolls.

What a Maroon. I love how the idiots get all butt hurt when they ask questions on classified information and get butts handed to them.

And yes of course I do resemble his Troll remark. And I am damn proud of it. Beer

Some of you Sub folks sure are funny...I mean sure the kid was a jerk, but your responses are typical of those that wish to sound mysterious and important. I guess the next time someone asks how an aircraft flies, I'll tell them sorry son that's "classified" or I could just say "google it" and they'd find out pretty much anything they were looking for...

P.S. not really meant as a dig on submariners this just reminded me of my high school buddy that went subs and then all of a sudden he was a James bond super secret ninja agent man. Not OPSEC just Oblivious

It's not trying to sound mysterious and important. After all, if he asked how a ship floats (about equivalent with how an airplane flies) then I would be glad to answer that question and go fairly deeply into the physics of it if he wanted. On the other hand, if someone asked you how the targetting system interfaces with the HUD, would you really give him the answer or would your answer be more along the lines of what I answered? They're both classified.

I am writing a report on submarines for a school project and was wondering if I could get some info like how many torpedoes are carried on subs, what the subs limitations are, wow fast and deep do they go, when they leave port and return, how to scram the reactor, how to “jump start” a sub, if one person could steal a sub, where the keys to start the sub are kept, a list of names and addresses of all current submariners, what nuclear weapons might be on subs and how to launch them if they might be present, what other weapons do subs use and where are they, is anyone is actually armed when the sub is in port and what weapons do they carry and when are watch turnovers, what is the CO’s daily routine and how does he get to work/where does he park, what is the best way to get a tour of a sub, and if haircuts are free on a sub. Thanks for all the help. Popcorn

We had a couple of bored bubbleheads shave their whole bodies on one underway. Does that count?

You think we leave them under the doormat or something?), a list of names and addresses of all current submariners,(Reality check! That info is soooo secret we don't even know our own phone numbers) what nuclear weapons might be on subs and how to launch them if they might be present(We usually have the small ones. We light the fuse on the bottom of the bottle rocket motor and run!), what other weapons do subs use and where are they(Well, we do have the mean tempered sea bass with the frickin' lasers on their frickin' heads, but they aren't always happy enough to do what we want...), is anyone is actually armed when the sub is in port and what weapons do they carry and when are watch turnovers(We all carry weapons, and all submariners are certified black belt ninjas, so we wouldn't need them anyway. Watch turnovers are generally when the oncoming guy shows up.), what is the CO’s daily routine and how does he get to work/where does he park,(he's the CO. He flies to work, sort of like Superman, then puts on his mild mannered CO disguise. Then he does pretty much whatever he wants until he decides it is time to go home. Another quick trip to the phone booth, and it's "Up, Up and Away!") what is the best way to get a tour of a sub, and if haircuts are free on a sub(Yes, they are free. And if they weren't, you wouldn't be willing to pay for it anyway.). Thanks for all the help. Popcorn

Sure the kid was a jerk? How is asking a question on a public forum grounds for being a jerk? Here's how I identify being a jerk, well there are several ways:
1)Suspending someone out of fear that they'll respond to your post and refute your ignorant claims.
2)Assume the poster is a)male "No Son..." or b)a kid.
3)Automatically assume everyone outside of the military is against you and shows only aggression.
4)Follow the crowd and harp someone for defending her/his actions in a polite and intelligent manner.

Actually, you're the least jerk out of all these underwater ******s.

@mpwimmer, I'm actually surprised you're capable of using a computer. Your syntax is so garbled and inane, I'm surprised you're not connected to a feeding tube you mindless sludge.
