Airmen Bomb Silly Safety Belt Rules, on Facebook

* By Noah Shachtman
* October 29, 2009

You’d think men and women who handle heavy weapons, fly the planet’s most advanced airplanes, and take care of multi-million dollar equipment could be trusted to go outside at night without wearing a day-glo safety belt. The United States Air Force would beg to differ.

Instead, airmen are ordered to wear the reflective accessories from the late afternoon on. That goes for domestic installations, and for war zone bases, too. Just like the rule about puttering around at 25 miles an hour or less in your military vehicle.

The whole thing has got airmen pretty annoyed, as you can imagine. So about 2,900 of them have taken to Facebook to stage an informal, online protest against the safety belt regulation — and to make all kinds of fun of it. 400 folks have joined in the last day.

“Do you think Vietnam would have turned out differently if we had warn reflective belts? Could we have caught Osama Bin laden a long time ago if we were less reflective?” gripes one frustrated airman.

“There are confirmed snipers around the perimeter of the flight line…here, put on your reflective belt so you don’t get run over by a fire truck!” laughs another.

“Nothing says ‘I joined the wrong service’ than wearing your belt indoors, on shift. Way to go Air Force,” sighs a third.

But the group’s brightest highlight might be the mock PowerPoint presentation on the long history of the safety belt at war. “If not for the reflective belt, George Washington would’ve lost boats in the ‘fog of war,’ thus rendering his crossing of the Delaware River pointless.”

We've worn disco belts on the flightline forever. During the winter in Iceland we wore them everywhere outside, even in civilian clothes. They have a purpose - so you can be seen. So what's the complaint about?

I think the major issue is the flightline folks that think its weird/stupid/gay,etc to wear them during the day while performing duties on flightline. Personally I think they are dumb cause if you're not paying attention and get run over your an idiot, vise versa if your driving and not paying attention. I think the Army was wearing them first and the Air Force just caught on to the idea Smile But Air Force Safety has a different take due to the fact we are not accountable for our own selves and the DOD owns us so therefore they like to protect their assets.

When the time is appropriate, sure, wear it. When jogging/bikibg/pt'ing in the early morning or evening, in the dark on the flight line or whereever. But in a war zone...no. All kinds of time and money is spent teaching you to be a hard target, and then you are forced to wear a reflective belt, just to make the bad guys job easier.

When does common sense take effect?

You have no clue as to the stupidity that revolves around something so stupid as a reflective belt. Start your research with a certain base called Al Udeid.

When I got mob'ed to Iraq I was issued DCU's at NMPS San Diego and when I got to ECRC Ft. Bliss I was issued ACU "battle rattle" and kevlar, of which to contrasting combination makes one stand out like a sore thumb (even on the FOB)and to make matters worse we were required to wear reflective belts at night while walking the FOB. I was told it was so that the drivers in vehicles could see us at night. I then wondered who the "braintrust" of that policy was. Reflective belts do a great job of lighting up a "target" at night.

I agree, common sense should apply. Are Combat Controllers and Security Forces engaged in perimeter defense required to wear reflective belts? That would be ludicrous.

But I've never been to any flightline in the AOR that was well lighted. Reflective belts have a proven purpose. If however, there is a significant enemy threat due to reflective belts, by all means, stop wearing them. Adam, I've been to Quatar. Has the threat increased, or just the stupidity of the disco belt nazis?

Any statistics on how many USAF deaths can be attributed to reflective belts? I had 12 friends from the 33rd who died at Khobar (and numerous friends injured), and no one I'm aware of blamed their reflective belt.

As you said, when does commom sense take effect?
