Have him talk to the education center on base, they should be hosting monthly commissioning briefings. Also check out

If he hasn't already completed his degree, he must do that prior to being accepted for commissioning training.

1) He can go OTS, assuming he completes his degree. He can do it off-duty (that's the route I went--had 69 semester hours when I started the process, then completed 76 SH evening classes/correspondence/CLEP/etc in two years). He can apply for commissioning when he's within one semester of completing his degree.

2) He can separate at the end of his enlistment, apply for ROTC for degree completion.

At one time, there was a program called Bootstrap, used to complete your degree and apply for OTS when you were within one year of degree completion. Essentially, you attended college full-time, AF put you on Permissive TDY for degree completion. You were still in the AF, receiving SSgt pay. Again, don't know if this program is still alive or not.

There are other, specialized programs, but these two would probably be the most reasonable, highest probability of success. Hubby needs to talk with the fine folks at his Education Office.

Happy to be here, proud to serve.

If he doesn't have success with receiving an OTS appointment, the Army is actively recruiting Officer candidates for at least the next several years. The selection and graduation rate is approximately 90%.

The Air Force and the Army have a program in place titled blue to green that makes the transition very smooth while not leaving active duty. The max age for Army OCS is 41 with waivers as of right now. A 4 year degree is still required.

Good luck for your husband in seeking the Officer route regardless of service. Thank you, your husband and family for serving our nation.

Since he doesn't want to separate, have him look into the Airman Education and Commissioning Program (AECP). He will have to major in something technical like engineering, math, or physics. Like someone mentioned above, have him contact his education office.

AECP is the best bet to stay AD. However, to piggyback on the Major's above comment, there are 3 ways to do ROTC & have is all set prior to separation:
1.) ASCP - $15,000 scholarship
2.) SOAR - ditto
3.) Two-Year POC-ERP - contracted cadet & he gets POCI (monthly stipend, books, etc.)
While medical coverage is a good reason to go for AECP, most larger universities have student health insurance plans available for both students & their dependants.

one problem is I dont think they would cover my problems as they are ongoing preexisting. but I will look into that thank you

also worried about him seperating then going into something in case he doesn't manage it, as his degree is going to end up criminal justice (as he is SF now, and would LOVE to stay SF as an officer) i don't know how competitive that will be in the grand scheme of things, and how likely he would be to be able to snag that with a commission?
but he is looking into the degrees desired by the AECP programme as well

thank you very much everyone for your help, its something I know nothing about so am trying to help him in anyway I can (the ed centre is being completely useless helping him around his work schedule as hes a cop so can't just leave to go talk to them)

but i truly thank you all!!

Kris, thanks for filling in some of the blanks. I usually make a point of not posting about something where I have neither knowledge or experience. ROTC mostly falls into that category, since I'm an OTS product. I had some friends who went AECP, but that was DECADES ago. I'm well aware of the concept, but not the details.

I'll still recommend a visit to the Education Office. They have (or, are SUPPOSED to have) all the details on the latest and greatest.

rgbilyeu, best of luck to your husband. Please keep us spun up on his decisions and progress. And thanks, too, for your contributions on the various forums here. Contrary to some schools of thought, I believe spouses have a very positive contribution to make here.

Happy to be here, proud to serve.
